UPDATED: NILI (1629 Moss Street) Odor Investigation/HVAC Cleaning Advisory 2/22/22

UPDATE 2/22/22:

The ozone treatment was not effective at 1629 Moss; however, after some searching this morning, we were able to identify the source of the odor. A rat found it’s way into the HVAC unit. CPFM is working with a contractor to disassemble and clean the unit, and repair the entry points into the HVAC system. This should take care of the odor once and for all.

The work will take a couple of days, and the HVAC unit will be shut down in the meantime. CPFM will provide space heaters to prevent pipes from freezing, but it may be cold in the facility for the next few days. The odor is reduced, but still present for the time being. Please do not leave windows open to preserve indoor temperatures.

Thank you for your patience while we work through this issue.

Kevin Farthing – CPFM – 541.346.2319

Original Message

CPFM and EHS have been working on an odor issue at 1629 Moss Street since mid-January. Our steps have included inspections into the annals of the building and a full HVAC cleaning project conducted by an outside vendor.

Last Friday, we deployed air filtration units equipped with charcoal filtration in an attempt to reduce the odor. While we believe they helped, the results were not significant enough for us to consider them an effective mitigation strategy.

EHS will be deploying an ozone generator starting this afternoon, Monday February 21, 2022 at 4:00 PM. The intent behind this treatment is to hopefully inert the remaining vestiges of odor causing material. The building will be posted on all doors during treatment. It is important to note that ozone is not healthy for people to breathe, so we ask that you avoid the building from 4:00 pm today, until tomorrow mid-morning. The generator runs on a timer, so the system will start at 4:00 PM and stop running automatically at approximately 2:00 AM. Ozone is a very unstable molecule, so it largely clears away within 30-45 minutes of the system shutting down. EHS will inspect and ventilate the building on Tuesday February 22, 2022 at 8:30 AM. The building should be safe to enter after 9:30 AM.

Thank you for your patience while we work through this issue.
