Frohnmayer Music Roof Work Smell Advisory 9/2/19 – 9/9/19

Update 9/6/19:

This project has been extended and is expected to be completed on September 9th.

Next week, from September 2nd6th 9th, Anderson Roofing will use an epoxy paint on the roof of the Music Building. The work will be conducted outside and only on the roof, however, occupants of the Music Complex may notice an odor during the time the paint is being applied.

It is advised that occupants, particularly on the 2nd floor of the South wing of the Music Complex, keep their windows closed during this period.  If occupants are concerned about the nuisance odor, they may move temporarily to another part of the building.  A Material Safety Data sheet for this paint is on file with EHS and with David Mason.

For questions or concerns, please contact Bruce Budzik at 346-8834 or bbbudzik@uoregon.edu.

Various Site Work Around Campus 9/16-9/27

Update 9/20: The equipment used to grind the walkways is under repair and work will resume next week. Due to this, the project has been extended and is expected to be completed on September 27th.

During the week of September 16-20 27, from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., CPFM Facilities Services will grind down problematic sections of cement walkways that pose trip hazards to pedestrians in select campus locations. Multiple grinds and/or patches will be happening in the following locations throughout the week, in no particular order:

  1. North side of East 13th Avenue in front of Friendly Hall and Fenton Hall
  2. South side of East 13th Avenue between Johnson Hall and University Street
  3. South side of Bean Hall from Moss Street, heading West to the Museum of Natural & Cultural History Museum crosswalk
  4. Northwest corner of Gerlinger Lawn between Gerlinger Hall and Gerlinger Annex
  5. Northeast corner of University Street and 15th Avenue lawn/pathway area

The map below indicates in green which areas are slated for repair.

Knight Law Generator Failure 8/28

Facilities Liaisons and EHS,

The generator at Knight Law water pump failed during routine annual maintenance. A new pump has been sourced and will likely be installed tomorrow, August 29. In the event of a power outage, Knight Law will not have back up power until the repair is complete. The back-up generator powers the fire alarm system, and in the event of a power loss, there will need to be a fire watch implemented.

For questions or concerns please contact CPFM Associate Director of Facilities Services Jim Cody at 541-346-2302.

Klamath Hall Rooftop Vacuum Failure Advisory 8/23/19-9/9/19

UPDATE 9/3/19:

The install of the new rooftop vacuum pump is scheduled for 9-6-19 9-9-19. The system will be back up and running by the end of the work day.

UPDATE 8/28/19:

The equipment is in stock in Portland and the Mechanical Shop hopes to have it installed by 9-6-19.

ORIGINAL NOTICE:

While performing a preventative maintenance check on the building vacuum pumps (providing lab vacuum air), it was discovered that the vacuum pump on the roof of  Klamath Hall has failed.  There is a second basement vacuum pump that is still operating normally. EHS confirmed that the vacuum doesn’t affect the safety function of the fume hood but does impact other research equipment or processes that use the house vacuum instead of stand-alone vacuum pumps. Ken Straw hopes to have the vacuum pump operational as soon as possible.

For questions or concerns please contact Ken Straw at ext. 6-5406 or kstraw@uoregon.edu

Hendricks Hall Drinking Water Update

On July 31, EHS tested all drinking water fixtures in Hendricks Hall on request of building users due to discoloration. Testing included the basement faucet and drinking fountains / bottle fill stations on floors 1 – 3. The results indicated:

  • Elevated lead in the 2nd & 3rd floor drinking fountains (27.1 & 56.7 PPB)
  • Lead well below the action level of 15 PPB in the first-floor drinking fountain (4.29 PPB) and below the detection limits in the basement kitchenette (<2 PPB).
  • Water in all drinking fountain fixtures was slightly discolored due to high iron content. Iron is a by-product of water that sits in the plumbing during periods of low building use and is considered a secondary contaminant by the EPA. That is, it affects taste and appearance of the water, as opposed to the health of building users. The basement water was not discolored when EHS collected its initial samples.

EHS tagged fixtures showing elevated lead content as soon as it received the results. CPFM then ordered filters, which should significantly reduce both lead and iron content, and installed them on Friday, August 23. EHS collected confirmation samples, which are pending analysis; results should arrive Friday or Tuesday.

In the meantime, the current situation is as follows:

  • First-floor drinking fountain/bottle fill station and the faucet in the basement kitchenette are safe to use.
  • Filters have been installed on the 2nd & 3rd floor drinking fountains, and confirmation samples have been collected. The fixtures will remain tagged until we receive confirmation results showing that lead levels have been reduced to below the action level. Please note that the signage was mistakenly removed when the samples were collected and has been replaced.

Analytical results will be posted on line at https://safety.uoregon.edu/drinking-water-monitoring this afternoon, August 28. Please let me know if there are any questions.

Johnson Hall Remodeling Activity 8/28/19 through mid-October

Project update:

The remodeling work in the southwest corner of the lower level of Johnson Hall, specifically rooms 001B-D, 001K-N, 003B, 003D, 019, and 020, is picking up again with moving activity and the disassembling of office partitions on September 12th and 13th. The construction of two new offices and remodeled storage area will begin September 16th. For the period of time between September 16th – 27th expect typical construction activity and noise in this area associated with the framing of new walls and installation of gypsum board wall panels. Less noisy activity and finishing work will continue into mid-October.

Original Notice 8/28/19:

Beginning today, Wednesday, August 28th, with completion expected by next Wednesday, September 4th, painting will be taking place in the lower level of Johnson Hall – specifically in rooms 1B, 1C, 1D, 19, and 20.

I apologize for the late notification: the painter had an immediately opening for the work and I wanted to take advantage of this opening during this time of busy construction workloads, so I was not able to submit advanced notification.

Please contact me, Gene Mowery, at 346-5593 or gmowery@uoregon.edu if you have concerns.
