12/29/17: 10th & Mill Alley Access – Advisory

Building Occupants,

The following message from the property management company regarding alley way access:

It appears that the Fiber project has the alley way blocked today. However, Greg spoke to the foreman and they will continue to give access to anyone that needs it. You may need to be a bit patient, but when they know you need access to/from garage or alley, they will accommodate.

We were not given prior notice of this work. I will contact the project head to make request again that we are given notice in the future.

1/2/18: Lillis Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Testing and Repair

Building Occupants,

Work on the Lillis fire alarm and sprinkler system is scheduled for January 2, 2018.  Intermittent testing will begin at 6:00 am and continue until resolved.  This repair is necessary as the horns, strobes and speakers are not syncing.

Horns, strobes, and speakers on the fire alarm system will not sound after the scheduled time, but there may be an activity such as door holders closing and smoke detector testing that will occur.  Provisions have been taken to monitor the building fire systems during this time and alarms that occur after the repair should be considered real events and occupants should evacuate as usual per the U of O Emergency Procedures.  We will send out a notice when the repair has been completed.

If there are questions regarding emergency evacuation, please visit Emergency Management & Continuity, http://emc.uoregon.edu/node/50 and follow the UO Campus Emergency Procedures Manual.

You may also contact Fire Systems Program Manager Zach Earl with Safety and Risk Services at 541-346-9295 if you have any questions or concerns.

1/6/18: Tree Removal by Lot 11 and between [FRIENDLY & COLUMBIA]

Campus Community,

On January 6, 2018, from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm Sperry Tree Care will be on site removing the Oak tree located between Friendly and Columbia.  This tree has been displaying a decline in health and vigor over recent years.  Increasingly, large sections have been dying back and sizable limbs have fallen out during minor weather events.  The University’s arborist has identified several large limbs with substantial decay issues. The tree stands over a major traffic hub for pedestrians and cars parking in the lot adjacent to Friendly hall.  The likelihood of major sections breaking out, possibly targeting the many people who could be passing during inclement weather is troubling and needs to be addressed. We have not anticipated pedestrian closures, and parking lot 11 will remain open but expect possible temporarily delays by the contractor as trucks and equipment come and go from the plaza.   There will also be noise associated with this work.

For questions or concerns please contact CPFM Tree Arborist Becket Dechant or CPFM Landscape Supervisor Phill Carroll.

Horns, Strobes, and Speakers on the fire alarm system will not sound after the scheduled time, but there may be an activity such as door holders closing and smoke detector testing that will occur throughout the morning. Provisions have been taken to monitor the building fire systems during this time and alarms that occur after the scheduled time should be considered real events and occupants should evacuate as usual per the U of O Emergency Procedures.

Message: [STREISINGER, HUESTIS, LISB, KLAMATH & DESCHUTES] Prohibition on Feeding Wild Animals

Dear Building Users,

This is a friendly reminder of the University’s prohibition on feeding wild animals at University owned or leased locations, as described in University of Oregon’s Animal Control Policy IV.05.02. Feeding squirrels/birds and other wildlife may seem a positive and benign activity, but often attracts feral rodents. Attractive conditions for rodent populations can lead to human health concerns, and they create significant biosecurity concerns for the research animals within Terrestrial Animal Care Services. To manage these impacts of rodents and other unwanted wildlife, the University implements a robust Integrated Pest Management Program. This program focuses on eliminating conditions attractive to pests, eliminating existing pest populations, and ensuring protection of human health and the environment.

Issues with rodents and other unwanted wildlife, and feeding of wildlife, have a history of recurring in of the immediate vicinity of Streisinger Hall and the Lewis Integrative Science Building. The health of adjacent research animal colonies is critical to the success of research being performed at the University, and your assistance educating staff and students about exposures created by feeding wildlife is greatly appreciated.

Questions about the University’s Animal Control Policy and the Integrated Pest Management Program should be directed to Environmental Health and Safety.

Questions about the biosecurity impacts to research animal colonies should be directed to Terrestrial Animal Care Services.

Respectfully,

Cassandra Moseley, Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation, Institutional Official
Mike Harwood, Associate Vice President, Campus Planning & Facilities Management
Steve Stuckmeyer, Director, Environmental Health and Safety & Radiation Safety Officer
Monte Matthews, Terrestrial Animal Care Services Director
Judith Eisen, Chair, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
