UPDATE 1/26/24:
The repairs are complete and steam has been restored.

The contractors will be cutting and welding the pipes during the steam outage today.  Occupants may experience a slight smoke smell during this activity.

 

UPDATE 1/25/24:
The needed part has been received and repair work will take place tomorrow, January 26th, from 7:00 am until the end of the day.  Steam will be shut down and heat will be offline during this time. A notice will be sent when the work has been completed.

Services Impacted:  Temperatures in the building are low.  The system is currently operating at approximately 30% to 40%.

1/09/24 and 1/12/24 Huestis Hall and Lokey Labs Fume Hoods, Exhaust, HVAC Air Supply and Fire Alarm System Shutdown

1st Day:             Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm

2nd Day:           Friday, January 12, 2024, from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm

Building(s) or Area(s) Affected:  Huestis Hall and Lokey Labs

Scope:

  • Huestis Hall: On Tuesday 1/9 and again on Friday 1/12 from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm, air and exhaust systems will be offline in the basement as the temporary AHU and exhaust fans are removed and final connections to building AHU units and lab exhaust fans are reconnected. User access to Huestis rooms 6, 12 and 13 should be limited or avoided during this shutdown.
  • Lokey Labs and Huestis Hall:  On Tuesday, 1/9 from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm, the fire alarm system will be offline to Huestis and Lokey Labs during this shutdown. Contractor will provide fire watch.

Services Impacted:  This will affect exhaust, fire alarm systems, fume hoods, heating, cooling, and the HVAC air supply.  Fume hood sashes should be closed and containers within the fume hoods sealed prior to this date.

Details:  Horns, Strobes, and Speakers on the fire alarm system will not sound after the scheduled time. Provisions have been taken to monitor the building fire systems during this time and alarms that occur after the scheduled time should be considered real events and occupants should evacuate as usual per the U of O Emergency Procedures.

Building(s) or Area(s) Affected:  Matthew Knight Arena, Bean Hall, Kalapuya Ilihi, Unthank Hall, Ford Alumni Center, Global Scholars Hall,  and the new Walton B & C Bldgs.

Scope:  To upgrade to electrical service in the new Housing project (aka new Walton or buildings B & C), there will be a brief power outage to install new equipment.

Services Impacted:  All normal power will be off to the entirety of the affected buildings from 7:30 am – 9:00 am. At 9:00 am, normal power will be restored to all affected buildings EXCEPT for the new Walton/B & C.  The new Walton will remain on standby power until 5:oo pm, after which normal power will be restored.

Special Instructions for Copiers:  Please shut down and unplug all multi-function copier devices as well as any printers during scheduled power outages. Scope:  Associated with the Heritage Renovation Project: Fortis Construction and sub-contractors will be Installing a temporary utilities cutover from Villard Hall to the Miller/Robinson Theater area beginning December 11th, completed by January 5th.

Services Impacted:

  • Steam, power, fire alarm, and network service will be shut down.
  • Villard Hall is already off-line due to the Heritage Renovation Project with demolition currently taking place.
  • The remaining areas of the Miller Theatre Complex – Robinson Theatre, Hope Theatre, the Scene Shop, Costume Shop, and supporting rooms – will experience heat, power, fire alarm, and network service loss while the temporary utilities cutover installation takes place.

  • Streisinger and Willamette Halls – Building supplied compressed air will go offline to allow adequate testing of the emergency backup compressor units. Users will experience limited to no availability of compressed air which is likely to affect air turrets at lab benches and possibly affect building heating and cooling supply. Users should plan to limit their use of the emergency supplied compressed air during this period.
  • Huestis Hall – No impact to compressed air service anticipated during this test period.
  • Lokey Labs – No impact to compressed air service anticipated during this test period.

Monday, October 30, 2023, 7:00 am – 1:00 pm: Outage in Huestis, Lokey Labs, Willamette and Streisinger.

  • At Streisinger and Willamette Halls, following the test results of the emergency backup air supply, users will experience a lower flow of available compressed air via lab turrets. Users should plan to limit use during this period. Heating and cooling supply may be affected during this period.
  • Lokey Labs will be supplied by a temporary air compressor. Users should plan to limit use during this period.
  • Huestis Hall will not have compressed air during the shutdown. Please shut down affected equipment.

10/09/23 – 10/13/23 Seasonal Building Steam Management for Fall 2023

Scope:  Starting the week of October 9th, 2023, the Mechanical shop will again implement its process for systematically activating the heat within steam-controlled buildings. This process can take several days depending on if any problems arise during this time.

Additional Notes:  Turning on and off the steam is very hard on the infrastructure serving our building’s mechanical systems.  Seasonal adjustments are based on the following format:

Steam is turned on in the Fall when:

  • Night-time outside air temperature is below 50 degrees for five consecutive nights
  • AND daytime temperatures are below 70 degrees for five consecutive days

Steam is turned off in the Spring when:

  • Night-time outside air temperatures are above 50 degrees for five consecutive nights
  • AND the daytime temperature is above 70 degrees for five consecutive days
