EMERGENCY UPDATE 4/29/22:
A pipe flange has cracked on the large steam pipe for Carson Hall.
Steam will be offline for Carson, Earl, and Straub until approximately 6:00 pm tomorrow evening.  Contractors are gathering the needed parts and will be making the repairs tomorrow.
(Steam has been restored for Living Learning Center and will not be affected by this shutdown.)

  • All of Living Learning Center will be on an alternate steam supply pipe and should not be affected.

Annual Autoclave Steam Generator Preventative Maintenance March 21-24, 2022

Scope:  Due to an asbestos abatement and condensate pipe repair project in the utility tunnel, a brief shutdown of steam will be required to install a bypass valve and drain on the condensate return system.

Services Impacted:  Slightly cooler room temperatures will be experienced in the building. Steam heat will be restored as soon as possible.

Buildings North of ZIRC Steam Heat Shutdown 11/01/21

UPDATE 11/1 at 3:26 PM: Steam has been temporarily restored. Further investigation and steam shutdowns will be required to permanently resolve the problem, but notifications will be sent out.

UPDATE 11/1: The steam pipe repairs are more extensive than originally anticipated. Steam heat will be down to the buildings north of ZIRC, including the greenhouses, for an unknown amount of time. An update will be sent when the steam is restored.

UPDATE 11/1: The water was restored and the restrooms are back online.

UPDATE 11/1: Due to an unforeseen issue with the steam pipe, the domestic water to Building 136 will be off for an unknown amount of time. An update will be sent out as soon as we find out more. The water is still on at Building 130 so please use the bathrooms there.

Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Clean Steam and Air Handler Shutdowns 6/14/21, 6/16/21 – 6/17/21

Scope:  The clean steam generator needs to have the steam isolation valve and the tube bundle replaced. We will be shutting down the steam and air handlers on Monday the 14th of June for approximately 5 hours starting at 9am, as a test to monitor the impact a lengthier shut down will have on the building later on in the week. If all goes well in regard to humidity etc. during the test day on the 14th of June, we will be shutting down the steam/air handlers to the whole building on Wednesday the 16th and replacing the isolation valve and tube bundle to the clean steam generator. The steam and air handlers will remain off until the 17th.  It is the intention of the mechanical shop to have all systems back and operational at the end of business on June 17th.

Services Impacted:  Whole building heat, humidity control, and supply air will be offline.

Outage will not affect areas outside of Human Physiology.

Services Impacted:  This work will require shutdown to the following services: HVAC heating water system and chilled water system and the steam line feeding the domestic water heater SHX-1; domestic hot water; and heating and chilled water serving AHU-105.

Clean Steam Shutdown 4/20/21

UPDATE 4/20: The autoclave clean steam heat exchanger is back online. Please allow 4-8 hours for the chemical treated steam to work its way out of the pipeline.

·           No building heat or hot water will be impacted.

Tykeson Hall Steam Shutdown 3/10/21

Scope: As part of warranty repairs, Alliant will replace the steam meter sensor in the basement mechanical room 001. At some point during the day, the steam will be shut down, for 30-minutes, to allow for this replacement – see attached Method of Procedure.

Services Impacted:

  • Steam will be offline for 30 minutes, affecting the building heat.
  • Smoke alarms will be placed in test mode and fire watch will be actively conducted by the contractor.

Special Instructions: Any alarms that occur after the scheduled time should be considered real events and occupants should evacuate as usual per the U of O Emergency Procedures.
