11/20/24 Hendricks Hall Routine Drinking Water Monitoring

Hi All,

As a part of the University’s ongoing drinking water management program, Environmental Health and Safety is conducting routine drinking water monitoring in Hendricks Hall on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. EHS will tag the drinking fountains and the faucet in the basement kitchenette by 8:00 am and will collect samples around 2:00 pm. Please do not use any tagged fixtures. All other fixtures within the building may be used as normal. EHS will remove the tags as samples are collected, after which the fixtures may return to normal use.

EHS expects to receive results in early to mid-December. Results will be added to our online results at THIS LINK. Results exceeding EPA limits will be communicated to building occupants via CPFM Work Control.

Thank you,

4/19/24 – Unknown – Paleoecology Research Building (112) Water Use Advisory

Begin:  Friday, April 19, 2024 – Effective Immediately

End:      Unknown

Building(s) or Area(s) Affected:  Paleoecology Research Building (112)

During the course of EH&S’s drinking water monitoring program, the water in the Paleoecology Building was tested. The preliminary results were reviewed this morning and the water in the building has elevated levels of lead. Because of these test results, the following actions will be taken:

  1. A temporary drinking water source will be arranged and installed by CPFM.
  2. The building will be posted with signage indicating the issue.
  3. EHS and CPFM will review fixtures within the building and determine which are intended for use for drinking and cooking. Appropriate fixtures will be investigated further. Fixtures not intended for drinking or cooking use, such as lab fixtures, will be tagged appropriately.
  4. EHS and CPFM will begin investigative work on the cause of elevated lead. The first step will be to flush test the fixtures. Based on the results, repairs will be made and the fixtures re-tested. Fixtures will not be returned to service until they have successfully passed confirmation testing.

Investigation and remediation of this issue will be a combined effort between CPFM & EHS. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me, Adam Jones at asjones@uoregon.edu.

6/15/22 Volcanology Drinking Water Notification

Hi All:

This notification is provided as an update to the water issues that have been reported in the Volcanology Building during the Spring of 2022. The issues reported have been centered around discoloration in the water. The discoloration is due to rust in the piping. The following actions have been taken or are planned to remedy the situation:

  1. The building fixtures were inventoried. It was determined that dedicated drinking water fixtures are present in the first and second floor hallways as drinking fountains. All of the other fixtures in the building are lab fixtures and are not intended for drinking water use. They will not be managed as drinking water fixtures.
  2. In early May, the piping to the first floor drinking fountain was flushed and the filter in the first floor drinking fountain was changed. This did not remove the noted discoloration.
  3. Last week, then entire building plumbing system was flushed and the filter in the first floor drinking fountain was upgraded to a charcoal filter. This appears to have helped, but we’ll see how long it lasts.
  4. A charcoal filter will be added to the second floor drinking fountain.
  5. The water from the first and second floor drinking fountains will be tested for corrosion byproducts after the second floor fixture has been addressed.

If you identify discoloration in the drinking fountains, please notify me ASAP at asjones@uoregon.edu. We will coordinate with CPFM and try additional mitigation steps to work towards solving the problem.
