Weekly Inspiration–Soul of Athens

Montage from Soul of Athens on Vimeo.

This montage of images is a great example of using abstract visuals to paint a picture of a concept; in this case, it’s “turning point.” The bicycle rounding a curve, the popping balloon, the fall of fresh snow on green leaves . . . all mark a transition between one phase and another. Interspersed between these images are close-up face to face interviews of people speaking about turning points in their lives. It’s an engaging introduction to a larger series from Soul of Athens, an annual collaborative project from Ohio University that generates multimedia stories around a theme. This year’s theme–turning point–is broken down into three sub themes: lessons learned, adversity embraced and lives transformed. It’s an interesting example of the power of collaborative work, especially on the university level. Something long-term to shoot for in this program, perhaps?

This video is a great teaser that draws the viewer gently into the meat of this year’s project.

This is great! It reminds me of the radio lab videos for “words” and “moments” in which you really have to discover what the connections are between the different shots. This video was engaging for the same reason. It allowed for a certain discovery through less straightforward shots. The tape from the interviews weren’t directly seen in the visuals. It required the viewer to make connections between the two that aren’t immediately obvious (or at least the weren’t for me!).
