SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (K-12)
Math, Elementary Grade Band
Huexotzinco Codex Math Lesson (grades 3–8). This is not one of the lessons produced by our summer institutes, but it is a wonderful, culturally-infused math lesson produced for the Library of Congress that involves learning to read Aztec (or better, Nahua) number glyphs. These glyphs appear on a manuscript from 1531. Working with them helps students become familiar with the vigesimal numbering system (which may help them better understand our decimal system, in contrast).
