Week 1 – Jerry Makare Introduction

Hello all, I am looking forward to getting a chance to meet you during this term. 25 people in the class, wow! That’s a fair amount of folks.

Currently I am the technical director of Intel Software TV, which is part of the software developer enabling and marketing division at Intel Corp. based in Hillsboro, Oregon. The term technical director is really just a grand name for “guy that makes videos”. I was hired in this position almost 5 years ago, and helped design, implement and drive the production of videos that would aid software developers using Intel hardware. In the course of these past years I have built and maintain a full service pocket video studio, and currently I am trying to get my program to embrace a more journalistic style focused on the telling of story as opposed to bland marketing videos and technical tutorials.

I am taking this particular class as a means to explore the idea of strategic communication in the exciting and engaging digital space (huzzah buzzwords….) that is interactive use experience. Because I have worked in a marketing organization for years I tend to have an almost visceral response to the way companies and often times individuals tend to market themselves. I tend to be a bit outspoken about my disdain for contrived marketing and poor use of social media, which will eventually get me in trouble.

I think this class will provide an opportunity to get new perspectives and that’s always an exciting prospect!

    Jerry,

Although I am from a very different background, I think that it is really interesting that you were able to see media as a means to communicate information to your audience of ‘technical tutorial staffers’. I think that in a sense, that is a type of storytelling as well. Furthermore, it is wonderful that you were able to take that knowledge and apply it to a completely different style of communication in the form of storytelling. I was interested in what you mean by ‘full-service pocket video studio’ entails. Does this mean that you shoot videos entirely from an I-Phone or other type of portable system? I look forward to getting to know more about your work during the course of the class.

A pocket studio actually refers to a full sized studio video studio that has been built into an existing space or lab. Pocket as in a pocket of space, not the pocket of ones pants! 🙂

My studio space is 9’x27′ and houses a “stage” with lighting supported by trussing, and a control area with sound board and 2 editing stations.

Sadly the story aspect is what is currently missing from my job. I am making a push to bring in story to a higher degree in what I do.
