Lexicons week 3

.) C.R.A.P. – Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity.  These are elements of design.  Contrast means avoiding things or objects that look to similar and often times can be the most important aspect of a design.  Repetition is repeating elements throughout your design, such as color, spatial relationships, shape, and texture.  Alignment refers to every element of the design having a visual connection with other elements.  Finally Proximity is how close items are in relationship with each other, creating a unified object or several scattered objects making the image feel incomplete.

.) Vector is a image format that uses mathematical equations (or curves, lines, and dots) to create images that can be resized without loss of quality.  Vector format is the main format in Print and Graphic Design, i.e. logos, posters, type, etc.  Adobe Illustrator is vector program versus the bitmap program, Adobe Photoshop which uses square points or pixels to create the image.  When bitmap images are resized there is a loss of quality.

.) Rasterize refers to the task of converting a vector image into a bitmap/ pixel image.  A raster image has flattened its layers and cannot be edited.

.) Opacity refers to the translucence of an image.  In design programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator, you are able to toggle the opacity of an object, meaning you adjust the degree which light can travel through (see through) the object.

.)Unification, I associate with design in this context.  To me unification in design is two parts; one creating a style, or all encompassing look for a company in their branding and marketing, and two creating an image where the components of the image work together to form a cohesive whole image.  By the first point I mean the style of the logo correlates throughout the entire brand, things such as websites, business cards, posters, even social media.  In branding and marketing, the media being delivered for a certain company should have a unified feel.  A designer can also have a unified style in the product that is produced, which is essentially part of that designers brand.
