1. Where did you move from to attend the UO? And, briefly describe how you landed on the UO AAD program. Any interesting, funny, anecdotal stories/details are welcome.

I have been living in Bend, Or for the past 9 years working in the Ski and Bike Industries (ski industry for 8 years). Before that I had a brief stint in Lake Tahoe and I received my B.S. in Industrial Design from Appalachian State in North Carolina. While looking at grad programs to expand my knowledge of managing Arts (in which I include Design), I came upon the UO AAD program, was impressed, and wanted to attend.

2. Area of concentration in AAD?

Right now I am concentrating in Museum Studies, but I am slightly swaying towards a generalist concentration, to explore all areas of Arts Management.

3. Describe your knowledge and use of technology systems.

My undergrad in Industrial Design provided me with a wide range of knowledge and use of technology systems. Cell phones, computers, i pads, cameras, and i phones are just a few that I use frequently. I use them for a variety of applications and personal use.

4. What software do you commonly use? Briefly describe purpose/application for software on your list.

I use quite a bit of software. I use photoshop for ,touching up editing, or resizing photos for professional use and some personal use. Illustrator for logo and vector design, Premier for Video editing, office suite for obvious purposes, and sketch up for basic 3D modeling because it is free. Those are the main programs I use, I am sure there are others that have slipped my mind. During undergrad I used Rhino 3D, Maya animation, and Alias 3D modeling, but they have not presented a use during my career. I also used to edit with Final Cut, but the Adobe improved Premier and Final Cut could not compete.

5. Do you have any graphic design or media production/management experience? Have you taken any graphic design or media production courses?

I have a taken a few courses in undergrad on the subjects. Graphic experience has come from various points throughout my career where I had to create a logo, graphic, or poster, but mainly in the management of the of the graphic designers. Video media production, I have extensive experience in producing various short edits early in my career, four short 30 minute documentaries in undergrad, and one feature length documentary for my senior studio project in undergrad.

6. Know anything about typography?

I enjoy typography though I do not go too in-depth. I mainly use sans serif type, with the occasional serif type, leaning more towards the modern side of things. You know comic sans…….not really, but seriously, Helvetica and Century Gothic for a variety of applications, but there are a lot of types out there and I like researching finding what I feel to be the best type for the job.

7. Do you use Web (2.0) apps? Name those that you use or are familiar with.

Web 2.0 is a broad term and can include many things. I am familiar with an array such as WordPress, Tumblr, Google Docs, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Video.Google, SlideShare, Linkedin, and various others.

8. Do you use Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, Yelp, etc.)? Name those that you engage in.

Personally I use Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. Mainly Instagram.

For my most recent position as a Digital Marketing Manager I engaged in all aspects of social media for the business, as well as back-end management programs such as Hootsuite, Iconosquare, and Business Manager. When working as a Business or a Brand they each have their specific use and compliment each other extremely well. Instagram and Snapchat, specifically Instagram, from my experience seem to be the most pertinent to applications today, as they are the programs with the largest growing and active user base.

9. Tell me something unique about yourself.

I generally enjoy most things outdoors. I am an avid mountain biker, skier, fly fisher, mountaineer, and surfer. Every summer I make the pilgrimage to the mountain biking and fishing mecca of British Columbia for a couple weeks. Come to think of it B.C. is heaven for just about everything (don’t tell anyone). Other than that I travel quite a bit to various places, usually to surf, climb a mountain, ski, or bike. Mainly I just like to explore, see the world, and meet new people.

10. Anything else?

I have a dog named Buckley, he is basically “Doug” from UP, though he may go on a few more adventures as he has been to 3 countries besides the US.
