Objectives for this week and all work throughout the course are based on the ABCD Learning Objectives framework (Penn State, Learning Design Community Hub) in which A = Audience; B = Behavior; C = Condition; D = Degree (measure) .
ATDOP course participants (Audience) by the end of this week (Condition), will:
- Read material about rubrics and create (Behavior) one rubric for a speaking lesson (Degree) using Rubistar.
- Post two times (Degree) to the course discussion site about rubrics and how rubrics can be used with students (Behavior).
- Participate in a teacher-led, small group Skype activity by giving a one-minute speech (Behavior) and peer evaluating the speech of other group members. (Behavior) with an acceptable score according to the small group activity rubric (Degree).
- Participate in a listening/speaking activity with a conversation leader (Behavior) with an acceptable score according to the conversation group rubric (Degree).
- Explore the suggested self-study activities (Behavior) for at least 30 minutes (Degree) and write about the activity in the self-study log (Behavior).
- Reflect on the teacher-led or conversation group activities (or about the week’s materials, tasks, and activities) (Behavior) in a audio journal recording of at least three to ten minutes in length (Degree).
- OPTIONAL: read the instructions about and create a Delicious account (Behavior) and add two websites to it (Degree).
Discussion topic – on course discussion site (Google group)
- Read about rubrics and create one on Rubistar (see directions below in Tasks). Go to your course’s discussion site (ask your instructor for the link to the discussion site if you do not know it. Post the URL for your rubric and respond to the discussion topic: What kind of class activity is your rubric for? How will you use it with your students? Your post should be between 100 and 200 words, and completed by 11:59pm Thursday, Oregon time. Post a comment to at least one other participant by 11:59pm Sunday, Oregon time.
- Rubistar is an easy-to-use online tool to create a rubric. You can either use the tasks and descriptors furnished by Rubistar, or you can use Rubistar to create your own customized rubric. In order to save your rubric, you must sign up. Once your rubric is saved online, Rubistar will save your rubric for a yearand you can retrieve it.
- Create a rubric for a speaking activity on Rubistar. Once you get to the Rubistar page, you need to sign up and save your rubric. Add your rubric’s URL to the course discussion. Submit your rubric to your instructor.
- Here are instructions about how to Sign up for Rubistar and create a rubric: Creating a Rubric in Rubistar
- Delicious is a way to save web links (Favorites/Bookmarks) and find them from any computer on the Internet. It also lets you share links easily with others. You can include links to other people’s Delicious pages on your page, too.
- Create a Delicious account (directions for creating a Delicious account) and save two bookmarks. Submit your Delicious account URL to your instructor.
Teacher small-group meeting topic
- During your Skype small-group meeting with your instructor, you will be giving a one-minute speech about a dream vacation or your best past vacation. You will peer evaluate your group members’ speeches using the Peer-Evaluation Rubric for Week 3 Activity Speech. Prior to your group meeting, prepare your one-minute speech and download the rubric. You will need one copy of the rubric for each member of your group.
- There will be a Q&A afterward about the activity.
Conversation group topic
- This week, during your Skype conversation group meeting, your Conversation Leader will describe her home town and you will discuss the most interesting aspect of the conversation leader’s town using as many superlatives as you can.
- Choose one or two options below (or choose something from the Useful Resources page) and explore the material for at least 30 minutes. As you interact with the sites, think about how you might use them to enhance your own listening and speaking skills. How might you use the sites with your students? Write about your self-study activities in your Self-Study Log.

- Record a two- to five-minute audio recording about your reflections related to the teacher-led or conversation group activities or about the week’s materials, tasks, and activities. Submit your audio journal to your instructor (see Week 2 for instructions about how to make an audio recording).
