WHP staff have created a set of tools we call the Distrance Research Environment and, along the way, adapted for our use, a number of open source, free imaging tools that are listed below. In addition, we are currently a major test bed for a University of Maryland-led collaborative effort called the TILE Project — an attempt to come up with tools for linking text and images. We also work with and test other tools that are developed for humanities computing.
We are prepared to help scholars — at the University of Oregon or any of our collaborators at other Universities — to adapt the DRE and the other tools we have or are working on to the particularities of their own project(s).
- Distance Research Environment created by WHP for online collaboration in the close analysis of primary research materials — specifically, object-based elements (textual or pictorial) of early manuscripts.
- Image Markup Tool – WHP has used IMT, developed by Martin Holmes at the University of Victoria to add XML markup and an easy way to annotate manuscript elements of the Mapas Projec.t
- Virtual Lightbox – WHP has used Virtual Light box to add functionality to the DRE’s data collection and analysis forms.
- Text-Image Linking Environment Project – The Mapas Project is a test bed for the two-year multi-university TILE project funded by NEH.
- Voyeur – part of the Zotero group of tools, Voyeur is a free, online text mining tool that WHP staff have tested and reviewed.
- Digital Sketching: WHP helped Nancy Cheng, Professor of Architecture, with the animation of of sketches made with the Logitech Io Digital Pen for presentation on the Internet.
