Machinima: Scenes from Virtual_Oaxaca

The following are short video files (in .mov format, playable in Quicktime) that capture a visit by Johathon Richter to Virtual_Oaxaca in Octoboer 2010.

  • Walk 1 — takes you through the vegetation into a re-creation of an imaginary part of Oaxaca city, where we have a stand for the sale of cocoa beans. The avatar stops to watch the short documentary film about chocolate created by filmmaker Gabriela Martínez. She also looks at a “notecard” that will have information about the significance of chocolate in the local histories and cultures.
  • Walk 2 — is a stop at a pottery stand, where the avatar is watching a short documentary film about pottery making at San Bartolo Coyotepec, also made by filmmaker Gabriela Martínez. The avatar also clicks on a notecard posted here about pottery making. We will be putting these informational cards into both English and Spanish.
  • Walk 3 — involves walking up to a food stand, and then entering a building where there is a parrot and a fountain in the middle of a courtyard.
  • Walk 4 — follows the avatar looking down Macedonio de Alcalá street (as it descends toward the zócalo) and then looking toward a stand selling rugs from Teotitlán del Valle. We have videos about spinning and weaving that will be incorporated into this space, along with additional notecards.
