Virtual Lightbox

WHP has adapted Virtual Lightbox 2.0 for use within its DRE initial database for the close study of image details during the annotation process.Written in Java, the Lightbox is a browser applet for image comparison and manipulation. Users can import images into the applet’s display area, arrange them in any configuration simply by clicking and dragging, magnify them, and apply basic image processing. It is free and open source and  available under the terms and conditions of the GNU General Public License

First developed by Amit Kumar at Maryland Institute of Technology in the Humanities (University of Maryland), version 2.0 was announced by Amit and Mathhew Kirschenbaum who further describes it as “of potential interest to anyone presenting images on the Web in a context where active comparison—what John Unsworth calls a “scholarly primitive”—is desirable.”

We have used Virtual Lightbox as one of the online tools nested within our Mapas Project DRE database. Below are a couple of static screen shots that demonstrate some of the functions of Virtual Lightbox. You cannot download this program. However, please contact us and we will put you in contact with the developers.

The following three illustration shows how Virtual Lightbox, inserted into our customized FileMaker database, allows us to manipulate an image for close study.
