Lexicon 11/8

  1.  Strategic Planning A systematic process of envisioning a desired future, and translating this vision into broadly defined goals or objectives and a sequence of steps to achieve them.  Strategic planning is setting goals, determining actions to achieve the goals, and mobilizing resources to execute the actions. A strategy describes how the ends (goals) will be achieved by the means (resources).

2.  CRM (Customer Relationship Management) –  a term that refers to practices, strategies and technologies that companies use to manage and analyze customer interactions and data throughout the time of the customer.   CRM systems are designed to compile information on customers using a variety of ways such as  company’s website, telephone, live chat, direct mail, marketing materials and social media. CRM systems can also track or give information regarding customer’s purchase history, buying preferences and concerns.

3.   Medium –   refers to the materials that are used to create art/works of art.  I read an article that I thought was interesting about how to explain design, color, topography with 4 and 5 year olds.  The author simplified his talk and had the kids do different activities showing them how color can be used to describe an emotion, feeling, or an object while topography can emphasize a word depending how you write it out, darken it, enlarge it, etc.  The use of different mediums is also an expression of design and a form of communication, as these children were learning.

4.  Social Impact/Consequence – Social impact is the effect of an activity by an individual, group, or an Organizations’ actions on the social fabric of the community and well-being of the individuals and families, it is how the actions affect the surrounding community. The consequence is the result or effect of an action or condition.

5.  Narcissism – the concept of excessive selfishness, excessive self love.   The term originated from Greek mythology about a handsome Greek youth named Narcissus.  He rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo.  These advances eventually led Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water until finally he changed into a flower that bears his name, the narcissus.    There is a spectrum of narcissism with the far extreme being a personality disorder.

There is a healthy amount of self love that I think everyone needs.  I did understand what you were saying about social media and how it can be an expression of narcissism.  I think there is a defensiveness about this especially among the younger generations as they are growing up with it and it has a totally different meaning to them.  I did not grow up with it so I do not use it as much or often as my own teenager. There is positive and negative to everything and a danger with those who fall into a narcissistic personality.    I see what kids post and it is all about them.  Kids post what they think without any thought to how it can hurt or affect someone.
