Lexicon 11/1

  1.  Distributed Cognition & Collaborative Intelligence –  Distributed cognition is the theory that knowledge lies not only within the individual but in the individual’s social and physical environment and seems to be more than simply an individual effort, but the collaboration of shared resources.     Collaborative intelligence is a measure of our ability to think with others on behalf of what matters to us all.  We discussed in class that it is a changing way we think, interact, and innovate each other and ourselves.  It seems that the new market leaders are “mind share” companies, where influence is more important than power, and success relies on collaboration and the ability to inspire.

2.  Informal Learning –  Learning  by experience.  Learning can occur in community, where individuals have opportunities to observe and participate in social activities, self directed study, peer interactions or experiences and learning outside the realm of traditional instructor-led programs.  I think of children learning about social skills through play, imitative skills.  I know this is more for adult learning but working with children I see the growth they learn from experiencing an activity.

3.   White Space –  White space has also been called negative space and can refer to a portion of a page left unmarked such as the margins, space between graphics, figures, lines of type.  This is a term used in graphic design practice.  It is considered an important element of design, the balance between positive and negative spaces that can create a pleasing composition.   I see this as a why to help a piece look aesthetically pleasing and interesting.

4.  Focal Point –  In design, a focal point can help to control  how people view your design.  In reading, a good design is the ability to capture the viewer’s attention and hold it even if briefly.   This is an interesting concept to use and to be able to look at various logos and brands to see if I can determine the focal point of their design.   I found this picture that I thought depicts a Focal Point visually.  The flower draws me in and the contrasting background and white letters help my eye move to the flower.

5.  Layers – Layers are used in digital image editing to separate different elements of an image.  By using multiple layers with Ai, you can create and edit specific areas or kinds of content in the document without affecting other areas or kinds of content.   I had a friend helping me figure out the logo design assignment and she showed me how to do this so not to lose everything and work on sections at a time.  When using layering for digital imaging, a layer has images that can be applied and placed over or under another image.  They are stacked on top of each other, and depending on the order, determine the appearance of the final picture.
