Lexicon 10/20

  1. Signature – a signature is a group of pages that are printed on both sides of a single sheet of paper that once folded, trimmed, bound and cut, become a specific number of pages depending on the page size and the size of the press sheet.  I found this so interesting to see how the printing process of brochures, pamphlets, etc were made from start to finish.  I have a whole new appreciation for the “junk mail” and ads that come to me through the mail.
  2. Hickey Picker –                                     I was curious what one looked like and found this picture.   When looking into this, there seems to be a lot of varieties that are used.  Most consist of a simple plastic design and will not damage the plate if scraping on the run.  It turns out that many press do this manually with a tool.  It seems to be a luxury to have the automatic Hickey Picker.
  3. DPI –  Dots per inch which is a measure of printing resolution, the number of dots in a printed inch.  Printers with higher DPI produce clearer and more detailed output or the more dots the higher the quality of the print having more sharpness and detail.
  4. Bleed – Bleed is a printing term that is used to describe a document which has images that touch the edge of the page, extending beyond the trim edge and leaving no white margin. When a document has bleed, it must be printed on a larger sheet of paper and then trimed down.
  5. Packaging  – This can be considered a technology of enclosing products for protection for distribution, storage, sale, and use.  Packaging can also be described as a system of preparing goods for  storage, transport, sale, and end use.  I found it very interesting that QSL would do everything from printing to packaging the products and even store boxes of the printed brochures in their warehouse until a designated date and then mail for an organization, after having addressed and put into envelopes. The whole process.
