Steppenwolf Media Map/Draft Plan

Juliet Rutter

1/26/2017

Blog:

Benefits:

  • Steppenwolf could increase the depth of information that they share with their following.
  • Sum up the activities of the time period as it relates to the shows being put on, to let people in on some stories, and to let people know what is coming up in the process.

Risks:

  • There is not much research as to how effective this social media platform is to arts organizations, especially theaters.

Method:

  • Explain why they chose what shows they did.
  • Their process.
  • More insider takes on the people they work with and their methods.
  • Use it every couple of weeks as it relates to the shows being put on.

Pintrest:

Benefits:

  • A wider net of fan connections
  • Being able to connect more easily with fans who are into the “how to” aspect of things

Risks:

  • It may be a heavy time commitment for a social media editor/writter/poster to have their fingers in all of the pies necessary to make this channel of media worthwhile.

Methods:

  • Post ideas about technical aspects of the shows.
  • Actors, directors, stage manager tips.

Twitter:

Benefits:

  • Have a more personal voice
  • Connecting one on one

Risks:

  • Flooding their social media

Methods:

  • Post more about things that are happening at Steppenwolf.
  • Have moments be captured and posted and also maybe link to Youtube videos.
  • Allow good tweets about Steppenwolf on the feed.

All in all it would be beneficial for Steppenwolf to have a more inviting presence on the website for people to follow on social media and also include all of the platforms (such as Instagram). If they had links to their other platforms of social media from their various social media platforms they would be able to connect to people in many different ways and broaden their scope. For example, their Facebook has no connection to their Instagram or Twitter.

Learning Goals 617

  1. Gain better understanding of programs and what they can do.
  2. Understand in what job situations programs we learn about would be used. For instance, would the same program that is used in theatre also be used in a museum? In the same way?
  3. I would like to learn more about how to target people. Rather than just understanding targeting theoretically, I would like to know specific instances where targeting is useful and how to apply that.
  4. I would also like to learn more about how marketing teams work.

Reflections on Learning Goals

1. Learn more about how to design things on the computer for marketing purposes.

I definitely learned more about how to design pieces for marketing. Taking this class allowed me to expand the elements of design beyond the theatre and into designing logos and posters, etc. Also, through having some private instruction, I was able to expand my knowledge of ways to make even something I wasn’t entirely sure about come to life and be effective.

2. Be able to use tech well enough to organize and manage information.

Learning about tech that is free on the internet like Trello is really going to help me in the future to manage my projects. I’m already incorporating it and other programs into my life on the regular. I have had a hard time in the past trusting programs on the internet, but now I’ve learned that they are basically the way of the future. Using internet apps have really helped me keep and consolidate my information. Now, I have just a few programs with all of my information that I need to access with more than just one device at my disposal. On top of that, if I have pieces of info that I need to keep from being erased, I have more than one way to keep them safe.

3. I would like to learn how to communicate more effectively with design.

This one was tricky. It took awhile to decide what is most necessary to include in marketing and when to include it, but after discussion in class it became obvious. However, it is not only what information is included, but how it is shown. Making the most important information the most easy to see and allowing the elements of design to guide the viewer through the information is the most useful thing I learned about communicating effectively. My vocabulary was also expanded and now I feel more capable in terms of communicating what I want to printers and to others about design and marketing.

4. I would like to be more familiar with different kinds of software than what I’m used to.

In class we learned a lot about internet programs and a couple different design programs. There was a steep learning curve. Learning about how to operate different programs on the internet opened me up to multiple ways of keeping track of information and creating different pieces of art. While being able to trust that my information is safe. We learned about Adobe Illustrator and InDesign both are design programs and both deal with what they do differently. Learning the difference between a vector program and others was very interesting.

Lexicon #8

1. Kerning

Adjusting the spacing between letters in a font type to allow for a more proportional and visually pleasing effect.

2. Emphasis

Using design principals to draw focus or to make an aspect of a design more prominent.

3. Descender

The portion of a letter that goes under the baseline of the font or path. It’s like a cave diver descending below the surface of the Earth.

4. Visual Impact

How markable is the design or visual piece? Is it memorable? If so it is likely visually impactful.

5. Constraint(s)

Keeping the design controlled in certain ways to allow for more creativity and/or uniformity.
