Weekly Update: Wk 9 and 10

I finished my graphic standards and I have figured out what I need for the rest of the media kit which may be something that I will need to finish over time.

Weekly Update: Wk 8

I have almost all of my graphic standards done. I just need to design a poster and a display ad. With that, about half of my Media Kit will be done.

Weekly Update: Wk 7

I have gotten a hold of Josh and will be getting the examples from OCT soon. I am also finding time to get into the library or the lab to work on my graphic standards, but it is slow going which means I’m getting a little behind schedule. I hope to pick up the pace in the next few days.

Weekly Update: Wk 5

I have decided to do graphic standards before I make the materials for a media kit.

I am also working on potential organizational structures for Brave Umbrella as well as questions as to how we want to present ourselves. However, the latter will likely need to wait until I have worked out what the structure could look like and then get it approved by the rest of my partners.

Midterm Progress Report

Proposal Progress:

So far, my progress in this project has been on schedule. My partners want to keep with the current brand that we developed last year. As of now, we have a list of media outlets that we have made available to us. We still have yet to develop strategies for developing and utilizing the media kit. I have done research on what it could include, but I need to narrow the options down to what will be the most useful and practical tools for now as our budget is tiny. We also need to have more discussion on the structure of our organization so we can more effectively present ourselves within the context of Brave Umbrella.

I am going to start focusing on our organizational structure, the media kit for the organization, and a media kit for our film that is in the editing process. I am also going to utilize my connections with OCT (Josh) to get some examples of effective media kit utilization.

Learning Goals Progress:

So far, I have been getting better at interpreting organizations and transferring that information through marketing. I have yet to start on the programs and actual making of the media kit.

Remaining Timeline:

  • Week 5: Do media inventory and start media kit
  • Week 6: Get half way done
  • Week 7: First draft
  • Week 8: Get feedback
  • Week 9: Finalize Designs
  • Week 10: Finalize format (Print?)
  • Finals: Submit

Weekly Progress Wk #4

Brave Umbrella had a meeting to talk about who we are and where we are going in order to figure out how we want to present ourselves to the public. We hit a bit of a dead end because we need more specific questions and directions. The first specific question we came up with is, “How do we want to organize our organization?” We considered that it may not be advised for us to just refer to ourselves as founders. However, we do not have structure outside of the four of us. As for direction, I am also not sure how other theaters have created and utilized their media kits.

I am in the process of creating a Trello list for this project and I am also working on the formal progress report. I am also working on research for how theaters use their media kits.

Weekly Update: Wk 3

I am working on getting a meeting together with the founders of Brave Umbrella. We are going to talk about who we are and where we want to represent ourselves. I also looked into “intro” and “thank you” videos for Patreon.

Project Proposal

Proposal:

For this project I would like to come up with a brand identity, a media inventory, and a media kit for my production company, Brave Umbrella Productions. As of now we are having a tough time knowing what to prepare and when. Having a structure will help immensely. We will likely be focusing on our brand throughout our marketing rather than just the shows. The shows are primarily contemporary stories about real people that artists feel are important for audiences to understand. However, we tell these stories in entertaining ways so that people will actually be able to relate on some level to the experiences on display. So, part of this project is learning how to translate these and other aspects of an organization into marketing platforms.

Learning Goals:

I really want to get a closer look at programs that are used to create marketing media and be able to use them more effectively. Additionally, I want to be able to interpret organizations and people effectively through marketing media.

Timeline:

  • Week 2: Submit Proposal
  • Week 3: Start learning the programs to do the project while figuring out who, what, when, where, and why of Brave Umbrella
  • Week 4: Finish step #3 to figure out brand identity and create Trello for media kit creation
  • Week 5: Do media inventory and start media kit
  • Week 6: Get half way done
  • Week 7: First draft
  • Week 8: Get feedback
  • Week 9: Finalize Designs
  • Week 10: Finalize format (Print?)
  • Finals: Submit

Strategies:

My strategies include talking to people and also learning through example as to how to accomplish my goals. Additionally, I want to learn from videos so that I can drive my own learning personally.

Evaluation:

At the end of this I would like something to be able to present to my partners and I would like to be able to replicate the techniques I’ve learned in various ways. As a intangible point of evaluation, I want to feel confident in my abilities to use design programs to communicate.

Learning Goals Reflection

  1. Gain better understanding of programs and what they can do.
    1. I was able to find out more about different programs based on the marketing research I did, listening to presentations in class, and by asking about other programs for my own projects.
  2. Understand in what job situations programs we learn about would be used. For instance, would the same program that is used in theatre also be used in a museum? In the same way?
    1. It looks like there is a lot of crossover in programs used for different types of arts organizations. Making programs work for whatever is needed seems to be a talent of arts organizations. Hiring marketing directors, not so much.
  3. I would like to learn more about how to target people. Rather than just understanding targeting theoretically, I would like to know specific instances where targeting is useful and how to apply that.
    1. Facebook is apparently a great tool for using targeted marketing techniques.
  4. I would also like to learn more about how marketing teams work.
    1. I did not get into this a whole lot, but this whole class was sort of like a marketing team. Collaborating with my partner Lauren was a really helpful way of thinking outside the box.
