Artifact Eight: Public Art Response

Unit Objectives

Original Post: Public Art Response

Reflection

The assignment of viewing the Runquist murals and responding to the assigned reading by Doss regarding public art helped me meet the objective of examining the public art’s role in capturing history and place-making. The Runquist murals are interesting for multiple reasons, such as the history and location of them. Reading the background on the Runquist murals and the brothers helped me understand how public art can capture history. The reading built on this notion of history and discussed how some ancient public art has been taken down due to new society shifts. With public art being taken down, it makes the public art that remains even more important. Many pieces of public art capture history and can add an aspect of history to a newly renovated area. The reading also touched on place making and the importance of it. The original piece below is a collage of various pieces of public art.

The reason why this artifact helped me meet the objective is because engaging with the Runquist murals then reading Doss’ views helped build my understanding of public art and the issues surrounding it. The Runquist murals really spoke to me given the history and story behind them, which aided me to examine the role they have had in capturing history. The reading did a really good job of explaining public art and the history of it. This combination of materials clearly illustrated the topic and learning objectives, which resulted in increasing my knowledge of public art.

Future

As mentioned in the artifact, public art is very fascinating to me. I will continue to strive to increase my knowledge of public art given it is one of the more interesting topics to me. There is a trend of increasing street art and I wouldn’t be surprised if we start to see more creative street installations as artists continue to push the limits. Going to see the Runquist murals in person also had a lasting effect on me, which will lead me to go visit more museums and art shows because the in person experience adds another dimension of art, creativity, and beauty.
