Artifact Two: Food

Unit objective

Original Post: Food is Art Essay

Reflection

This artifact is the food is art essay, which explores the notion of food as an art form. The essay starts with a quote from Oscar Wilde in Elizabeth Telfer’s piece, “All art is quite useless” (Wilde 1948:17). This quote gives a good starting point for deciding whether food is an art form, which is something Telfer’s piece discusses at length. I considered if thought food was art without researching or using any other external resources. Then I found an article that discussed why food is not art, which helped me further explore the notion of food as an art form. Thinking through the issues raised in the article functioned as a learning tool for whether I think food is an art form.

The reason this article meets the unit objective above is because my essay includes multiple points on whether food is an art form. Having this discussion directly after our discussion in week four about what is art was definitely beneficial for my understanding on whether food can be an art form. My essay also discusses the trend of “slow food”, which is a trend that suggests food is an art form. Furthering my understanding of food and it’s relation to art only fuels my love for cooking. As seen below, we made cinnamon rolls this past weekend. The more I look at this picture the more I see a flower formation, which is a cool piece of art in my eyes.

Future

Given my love for food I will continue to see food as an art form. The unit material furthered my understanding for food and whether it is considered art or not. I want to research more about the “slow food” trend, which we heard about from the video presentation. I’m confident my love for food and art will grow, which will increase my interest on keeping up on current trends, and doing additional research.
