It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s a Brand!

With growing up in Indiana, I have had quite a bit of contact with regional brands. Here are a few that I have come in contact over the years:

1. The Indianapolis Children’s Museum

The Indianapolis Children’s Museum is the world’s largest children’s museum. At first glance at the logo, the typography puts an emphasis on the fact that this museum is a children’s museum first and foremost. Adding the city of Indianapolis underneath states the location without overshadowing the rest of the design. The blue and green used represent the very happy environment of this place of learning and intellectual growth. In addition, these colors are also the two main colors of the famous water clock that is a permanent part of the collection at the museum and, for many years, greeted the visitors as they entered and exited the museum.

2. Indiana University

Indiana University has many variations on its logo, often being associated with different schools or colleges within the university. The common factor within these logo variations is the IU trident and the crimson and cream (or often white) color scheme. Indiana University has a mind boggling nineteen campuses in the state of Indiana. This logo not only captures the connection of Indiana University and the state of Indiana, but also the size of the IU logo is representative of the number of campuses and the areas of the state that are represented. The stark contrast between the crimson and white of this variation draws attention to the logo on an item such as a shirt as a way of simplistically stating that “this is Indiana and Indiana University.”

3. Taste Cafe

Taste Cafe is a small bistro restaurant in the ever growing Broad Ripple Arts district of Indianapolis. The minimalist design of this logo communicates a lot of different things. The uniqueness of the typography is an acknowledgement of the uniqueness of the cafe and the Broad Ripple Arts district. The color advertises the friendly environment of this cafe that is open to the community. The color is also a continuation of the interior design of the cafe which is filled with oranges, browns, and varnished wood. The design is simple just as the food is prepared simply.
