Here’s my final template design for my showcase portfolio. I created it last term for my final project and still really enjoy it! I wanted an art deco feel to the page (because I wish I was art deco lol) to illustrate my love of art history and the combination of classic but quirky. The image at the bottom will usually be covered up by some sort of text box so it won’t always draw the viewer’s attention.

Assignment #6- Web 2.0 Apps Abstract
Web 2.0 Abstract: Skype – http://www.skype.com
Abstract
What is Skype? Skype (pronounced -skaip) is one of the Voice over Internet Protocol application which lets it users make free phone calls. The calls should be between Skype-equipped computers and less expensive calls between Skype computers and landline or mobile/cell phones. Skype along with Vtalk, Pinger, Textplus, Mo+, Textme, Textnow are some of the contemporary businesses providing Internet mediated services.
Skype Application: Skype, as a Voice over Internet Protocal (VoIP), has an application which functions on a P2P model rather than as a centralized application.
Skype features: Skype offers features such as voicemail, call forwarding, conference calling, caller ID, and video chat. In many instances, Skype provides access to video and voice communication for a token of what other options charge. It provides and facilitates more frequent contact between friends, collaborators, and families. It allows connections with those not likely to be in touch through contemporary phone systems. To make skype calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones one has to pay a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging and file transfer. With skype, you can also do things such as forward your voicemails, get them sent to your email, purchase multiple Skype numbers for one account, and if you are a business operator, you can even organize public chat sessions with your customers.
Skype values/benefits: Since I have a split family (in Uganda and in USA), I have used Skype more than 1,000 times, therefore I have the authority to identify its values to me as one of its frequent customers. There are four main values/benefits for using Skype namely; call quality, low cost, flexibility, features and functions.
I have already mentioned and explained its features, but as for flexibility, skype has two major things that makes it a very flexible tool. One of the tools is that Skype is a software application. This means that Skype can be accessed on just about any “screen” that has an internet connection, and this includes your personal computer (PC), laptop.Ipods and mobile phone allowing you to access Skype just anywhere.
Secondly, Skype is more than just voice calls. With Skype you can also conduct conference calls, video calls, instant message, send and receive SMS messages as well as collaborate with others via file and screen sharing.
Thirdly, as mentioned before the cost of skype calls between skype users is free. Skype download is also free. To call non skype users, they offer unlimited monthly calling plans starting at just $2.50, no other voice services can match the low cost of using Skype. Remmember that in addition, Skype does not require expensive hardware, but just a voice optimized USB headset or speakerphone, and you are set to talk.
Finally I have read, (but not talked to victims) a lot of information on the Internet that states Skype is not a reliable service. I know Skype does not provide 911 services, but i have found it to be as reliable as any other VoIP service. It voice calling is of high quality. Skype also have their own low bandwidth high definition voice codec that enables Skype users to conduct voice calls in high definition.
All in all, skype is a wonderful communication tool.

PLE Narrative
There are several different categories in which my Personal Learning Environment falls, they include, tools, influences, sources and more.
First of all, the things I do in my everyday life are influenced by external environment. This external environment compries both physical and personal environment. In my personal environment, there is my family (we do a lot of things together as family and learn from each other) and friends (we meet during leisure time and go places like bars and have a drink), then in my physical environment i have college (University of Oregon) and work (Swahili Imports Inc.). Next, are the tools I use in my personal learning environment, among them is my laptop computer, my PC, my Ipod, my home phone and my celphone. Along with the above are the organizational systems I use which include my personal dairy (for things to do), wall calender (i mark some activities with dates), yahoo calender and online banking (for e-banking).
Another form of category relates with the way I reach out to the world (communicate), and my information input. I gather my information from social media (facebook, twitter, youtube), KLCC radio, The Register Guard, yahoo News, NBC news, UO library, AAD course sites and other cable televions. As for reaching out to the world, I use Gmail, Yahoo mail, UO webmail, Criket cellphone, skype, comcast home phone and others.
Creation is the next category of my PLE, after i have gathered the information and communicated about assignment. At this stage I frequently write by using scracht books, typing papers plus laptop and PC. When I use a computer my common program is google docs and microsoft office word. If it is school work, I finally use my eportfolio to upload my finished work.
Distribution is the last stage of my PLE. I use my ePortfolio to distribute my work. I also use google mail, yahoo mail, and facebook. Sometimes I physically give hard copies of my final work to my professors and people I work with.

I chose the Swahili Imports we site, because I work with that company, and felt good analyzing their site. As a worker, i have always appreciated this website, and thought it to be great, but after attending this class and discussed website design, i realized that it wasn’t the greatest as thought before. I think this class is important because the skills attained helps you to see websites and other designed material from a different perspective.

Assignment Description
Students will have their site design completed with navigation scheme in place, content areas identified and ready to export to Dreamweaver. Depending on the web production approach chosen, students will have to prepare and purpose their design and or design elements for that specific approach – production with HTML CSS, Divs, ApDivs, and/or combinations of these features. Students also need to have identified any additional programming features they will include – examples of this are galleries, java scripts that key specific actions, etc. A screen shot accompanied by a brief narrative in PDF format will be turned in.

I liked the design I came up with last term so I decided to use it for my final template design. I did make a few changes to the catergories which are reflected in my new design. All of my navigation points are located at the top up of the page. I like that my page is simple and does not include a lot of extra designs because I want it to look streamlined and professional. Additional program features will include roll over color change and some photos. I don’t want any drop downs from the homepage navigation points.

Assignment Description
I have chosen to design my site as a rollover HTML site. I am somewhat familair with Dreamweaver HTML and so I think this makes the most sense. Also, I really like the rollover function–I think it is easy to navigate for the user and presents well. I will be using galleries for photo content in some areas.
