AAD 585 Assignments, Midterm & Final Description

Included in this section of the AAD 585 Multimedia Design and Presentation curriculum section are descriptions, specifications, and target dates for producing/completing all assignments during the course. Recommended software applications, helpful tips, examples and links to additional example and resources are found here as well.

Assignment #1a – Showcase ePortfolio Project Narrative (1a and 1b posted/turned in together): Due 1.22.13

Students describe the intents and content for  their showcase ePortfolios, addressing what they will include, where they will get the content, types of media used, overall architecture/structure of the site, and how they envision user interaction. This is a precursor to mapping the site.  Length will vary but a few paragraphs (between 1/2 -1 page) should be plenty.

Assignment #1b – Showcase ePortfolio Project Webmap (1a and 1b posted/turned in together): Due 1.22.13

Students create and/or revise a flow chart/webmap that reflects the content categories/information chunks and the subset information that falls within each main chunk. Maps should be annotated with brief descriptions of what is to be included in each content chunk and where/how the content will be collected and/or generated. An outcome of this assignment is to generate a content checklist.

Assignment #2 – 30-60 Second Movie Exercise: Due 1.24.13

Students create a 30 second video using iMovie, Movie Maker, Premiere, or other video editing software using still images and audio. The intent is to “play” with different aspects of basic video editing  including titles, transitions, clip trimming, manipulating audio, etc., in order to familiarize themselves with the tools. Since this is an exercise, the theme/storyline is up for choice.

Past cohort examples can be found here.

Assignment #3 – Showcase ePortfolio Project Timeline: Due 2.12.13

Students create a timeline, a chronology of events to complete their websites. The timeline is an outline of calendar dates detailing activities with specific tasks necessary to complete the website. Timeline Example PDF

Assignment #4 – Showcase ePortfolio Project Final Site Template Design: 2.14.13

Students will have their site design completed with navigation scheme in place, content areas identified and ready to export to Dreamweaver. Depending on the web production approach chosen, students will have to prepare and purpose their design and or design elements for that specific approach – production with HTML CSS, Divs, ApDivs, and/or combinations of these features. Students also need to have identified any additional programming features they will include – examples of this are galleries, java scripts that key specific actions, etc. A screen shot accompanied by a brief narrative in PDF format will be turned in.

Assignment #5 – Arts Organization Website Case Study: Due 2.19.13 (will be presented on both 2.19 & 2.21)

Students will pick an arts organization (their internship site makes for an interesting choice) and critique the organization website. The case study will include a brief backgrounder of the organization, an overall assessment – addressing design, UI, navigation, functionality, and content, and prescription for improvement. These will be presented to the class on February 19th, and 21st. Website Case Study Example #1, Website Case Study Example #2, Website Case Study #3

Assignment #6 – Web 2.0 Apps Abstract: Due 2.28.13

Students pick a Web 2.0 app that they use, and/or one they are interested in knowing more about, to write a brief abstract about its features, application, and value. This will be presented like a product review, approximately a page in length, and submitted as a PDF. These will be shared on my instructional blog. Web 2.0 apps include Diigo, Skype, Prezi, Evernote, Flickr, hulu, digg, weebly, Linkedin, and many more.

Excellent Web 2.0 resources and links can be found at the Web 2.0 Tools & Apps RSS feed on this blog or direct from here at GO2Web20

Midterm – PLE/Movie: Due 2.07.13

PLE – Students create a graphic representation of their Personal Learning Environment – examples on my blog from past cohorts, and links to PLE sites. A written and/or recorded narrative must accompany the PLE (depending on the media type used for presentation). The Graham Atwell Slideshare link is a good reference.

Movie – Students create a 2-4 minute video biopic or one based on a passion that represents who they are, an interest, etc… but the intent is to create a piece that demonstrates their knowledge of how to use video as a viable communication tool in their Arts Management area study; that it can be included as a work sample on their Showcase ePortfolio. Use of video and still images, and audio trackediting is encouraged, as are other content features and editing unique to this presentation medium. This will be exported in a Quicktime or MP4 video format at the Vimeo recommended export standards. Videos will be made accessible via Vimeo or another video sharing network.

Past cohort examples can be found here.

Final – Prototype Professional Showcase ePortfolio Website: Due 3.19.13

Students will create and make live their Prototype Professional Showcase ePortfolio websites for presentation to the class.
