Undergraduate Career Forum with ThermoFisher Scientific 2024

Women in Graduate Sciences are thrilled to collaborate with ThermoFisher Scientific and UO Industry partnerships to put on an undergraduate career forum. This forum is for any student who is thinking about their future, wants to learn what they can achieve with their degree, is interested in working in science industry, and/or wants to learn from successful women in science.

We will feature ThermoFisher employees and other local scientists ranging in specialities from Research and Development to Operations to Marketing and more!

Our event will run from 5pm-7pm in Knight Library 101 on May 14th with panels running from 5-6:30 and networking from 6:30-7. We encourage students to come even if they can’t stay the full time. We will have pizza and refreshments for everyone!

Hannah Pigg Sr Intern Biology R&D I am a fifth year PhD graduate student at the University of Oregon, working as a lead intern at Thermo Fisher in the Biology R&D division. I am currently working part time at Thermo Fisher, while also working part time as a research student at UO. I can provide a unique perspective on the challenges and rewards of working congruently in both industry and academia. I am currently working on two main projects at Thermo Fisher. The first project focuses on using lyophilized LIVE/DEAD cell dyes for flow cytometry, and the second project centers on drafting a methods paper for 3D cell culture characterization. I have 7+ years of research experience across various fields of chemistry, biochemistry, and cell biology. I also have experience in STEM based teaching, mentoring, and community outreach programs.

I make and dispense the materials according to a batch record, followed aseptic technique if it was suggested or required and dispensed the material into the specified containers according to the buyer’s specifications. Leticia Montoya Staff Research and Development Scientist I have experience in chemical approaches towards analyte detection in biological systems and development of immunoassay kits against metabolic and signaling targets.  I now develop products and solutions for detection of cellular targets and functions using cell-based assay platforms such as flow cytometers, microplate readers, and microscopes. I serve as a technical lead for product development workflows and works amongst several biologist and chemist on cross-functional teams.  I also interact with customers on a personal level to educate the scientific community.

Dan Beacham Senior Staff Scientist I develop and commercialize cell based imaging and high throughput assays for basic sciences research and drug discovery. A significant amount of my work is done in structure-activity relationship measurements of candidate fluorescent dyes in specific readouts of cellular function, and I also work with existing materials in novel applications or approaches to emerging scientific needs. I have developed a wide range of readouts for cellular excitability, internalization and cell surface target interrogation. Kat Carey Technical Application Scientist II My previous research experience encompasses molecular metabolism and endocrinology, oncology, immunology and vaccine therapies. During undergraduate, I spent 3.5 years doing ovarian cancer research at Oregon Health and Sciences University. This experience helped lead me to the UO to go to graduate school.  I received my master’s degree in science from the UO under Dr. Carrie McCurdy, and taught physiology/anatomy courses for three years. After that, I worked in a vaccine/immunology lab at Oregon Health and Science University. I have 8 years of research experience, and now work in a different aspect of the scientific field. This led me to my current position at Thermo Fisher Scientific. As a technical application scientist II, I provide remote pre and post sales technical support of products to customers and field personnel in the laboratory products division (LPD). I help customers troubleshoot issues they encounter with our products and recommend different products for their specific assay/experimental requirements. As a Technical Application Scientist II, we provide technical support for Thermo Fisher Scientific laboratory plastic product lines and services by answering customer technical inquiries.
