AAD 550: Learning Objectives Reflection

1.- Explore how the professionalization and commercialization of the arts impacts the creative process.

This was certainly a key element in some class discussions, though I think that this could have used some more discussion and there is much more to learn in this topic.

2.- Further my understanding of “art” as a term, practice, and profession.

The thorough discussion of arts participation definitely expanded my notion of the arts as a professional and academic field.

3.- Evaluate my role as an arts administrator from multiple academic perspectives, connecting theory and practice.

This was particularly accomplished in the more recent class discussion about the future of arts participation. As I begin moving into this field, having some ideas about where the arts might go will be essential as I reflect on potential professional opportunities and how to best serve whatever organizations I become a part of

4.- Search for potential solutions to academic concerns in the field of arts management.

While there were really no solid solutions proposed, I do feel much more aware of issues in the field of arts management such as balancing business with creativity and uow to engage wider audiences, and thus better prepared to face them.

5.- Use transmedia theory to expand my understanding of the performing arts.

Especially in the context of theatre, a medium based in story telling, transmedia has become central to my understanding of the art and I am eager to continue exploring performance accross a variety of mediums.

6.- Study the performing arts from folkloric and sociological perspectives.

Focusing on the Hult Center for the module 1 essay played a major role in accomplishing this goal, as did exploring the idea of transmedia.
