Artifact Four: Enjoying Horror

Unit Objectives

Original Post: Enjoying Horror

Reflection

The assignment of watching and analyzing the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode in Week 6 allowed me to analyze the unique aesthetic qualities of horror art and utilize some basic principles of firm and TV analysis. For the assignment we were asked to find examples of three film criticism terms, mise-en-scene, diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound. The examples I found can be seen in this artifact. By understanding these basic principles I was able to watch the episode more attentively and notice unique aesthetic qualities in the episode. My example of mise-en-scene discusses aesthetic qualities, which contributes to the artifact meeting the learning objective.

The reason why this artifact helped me meet the objective is because without this basic understanding of principles then it would have been more difficult to analyze the unique aesthetic qualities. Also, by actively looking for examples for each term it caused me to pay closer attention and reinforced the terms, which increased my understanding of the terms. By learning these terms, it also allowed me to learn why horror is considered art. Previously to this class, I didn’t believe horror was art. Given this, the assigned reading of Noel Carroll’s piece was very beneficial in outlining the basic principles and terms of aesthetic qualities of horror art. I discussed some of Carroll’s points in this artifact, which highlights my understanding of basic principles of firm and TV analysis.

Future

While horror as art doesn’t greatly appeal to me, I do see the potential beneficial value that others get from watching horror films and TV shows. The original piece is my collage of how I see horror as art.

Caption: This collage illustrates aesthetic aspects associated with horror. For example, the blurry spirit rising from the bottom, the chair in the gloomy setting and the spooky mansion.

I will use the basic understanding I have developed in this class to research horror as art in the future and maybe my interest will grow in the subject. The one thing I do really admire about horror as art is that it seems to be very creative and colorful, which are both two aspects that catch my eye. See this artifact for my definition of creativity.
