When Things Changed – Jim Olsen

“When Things Changed” is a new recording from composer /flutist Jim Olsen. The CD contains 10 original works that feature Olsen on flutes and electronics, with contributions by outstanding musicians on trumpet, percussion, saxophone and guitar.

The music on “when things changed” is somewhat of a departure for Olsen, brought about because of the imposed social isolation of the last eighteen months. “There’s not as much emphasis on what people consider ‘traditional’ elements of jazz,” said Olsen. “Some of my other musical influences – Stravinsky, Varese, Boulez, etc. – dominate the sounds that you’ll hear. This is much more of an ‘audio journal’, a way for me to make sense of the events that have been radically reshaping our world.”

Guests on “when things changed” include renowned jazz trumpet artist Jim Rotondi, rising trumpet star Tony Glausi, and internationally-known guitarist Jane Getter. Rotondi is joined by saxophonist Lynn Baker, pianist Torrey Newhart, and drummer Adam Carlson for the swinging “Framework (for Mark Isham).” Tony Glausi and drummer Ken Mastrogiovanni duet over the thrashing electronic landscape of “Need-To-Know Basis”, and Getter joins Newhart and Carlson for the odd-metered “Treacherous Little Dwarf”.
