I think you right in utilizing the map, however, could the smaller charts and diagrams be added to create more meaningful information? For example, you have a chart about number of whales and number of boats. All that is missing is a connection to location to really show an impact. Utilize the map given to highlight these attributes and direct effects. This goes for the number of wales on given dates. Is it in the PNW? where along the path of travel is this counted? or is it among a large group as they migrate?
Remember that cohesion is important in helping legibility and creating a project identity. Decide on only a few colors next time, and if you need more, change saturation or tone of the set colors to display gradients and time.
