0.1 From object to field

The field condition introduces the idea that multiple different elements can still work together cohesively. The different elements can follow similar characteristics through intervals, repetition, and seriality, that allow for the strong relationships to be made. “Form matters, but not so much the forms of the things as the forms between things”(92). There is no overarching system to be followed as making a unified scheme lies in the local connections.

0.2 Geometric vs. Algebraic Combination

In the west, it is common for structures to be calculated from the initial idea. In contrast, the more east you go, there is more leeway for additional changes. Even though there are added elements after the initial construction, they work cohesively due to the established design parameters, as seen in the mosque at Cordoba. As Allen mentions, “parts are not fragments of wholes, but simply parts”(94). Each part can have it’s own purpose that add to the whole but do not take away.

0.3 Walking out of Cubism

Minimalism focuses on tailoring to the users and creating something with intentionality. Minimalists tend to focus on the ideas behind the purpose. On the other hand, post minimalism is less concerned with underlying structures. As stated as one of the key points of post minimalism was that, “the displacement of control to a series of intricate local rules for combination, or as a ‘sequence of events,’ but not as an overall formal configuration….instead the artist establishes the conditions within which the material will be deployed, and then directs its flows” (97).

0.4 Thick 2D

Many cities are organized as a grid system. If a city has multiple landmarks near each other, you know that there will be a large gathering of people in those locations, but how does this affect the people just passing through or neighboring buildings? The grid helps you to identify the relationships between structures through the figure ground of the interactions of the users that you may not have considered. “Unexpected effects, exhibiting complex and apparently irregular behaviors result from the combination of elements that are in and of themselves repetitive and regular”(98).

0.5 Flocks, Schools, Swarms, Crowds

The crowding condition is that there is a naturally occurring pattern of the way living creatures interact with one another. Even though they may not be calculated movements, few outliers will not affect the whole of the movement. There is not a way to control nature, but you can observe and analyze the pattern to fit the needs. Four key points to this condition include “the crowd always wants to grow; within a crowd there is equality; the crowd loves density; the crowd needs a direction”(100).
