Exercise 1.1
- The idea that different parts can create a whole cohesive piece but still remain different parts was a recurring theme throughout the reading. Whenever the parts are consistent or have geometric or algebraic hierarchy the most important part is that the piece works as a cohesive whole. Both Geometric and Algebraic hierarchy are still ‘organized to form large wholes’.
- Another thing discussed as a main idea in the reading was the idea and the classification of crowds. The main four classifications being the crowd always wants to grow, the crowd has equality, the crowd loves density, a crowd needs direction. You use the idea of a crowd in Architecture instead of the up down hierarchy commonly used to look more into a down up hierarchy.
- A recurring theme throughout the reading was a serial or sequence of events. Whether it be sequence of effort of compositional syntax or serial order of different parts. The idea that a control of the series of events can lead to a sequence of events which in return can be the field or the overall form but not all the time it can also not be and only be a piece of it.
- The form between spaces is more important than the actual form of the building. The idea of the form extruding from the landscape it should instead flow from the landscape and work as a whole. One way to do this is to extend into the landform to use thickness instead of vertical hierarchy like in most cities. ‘Not as an object read against read against a stable field but as an effect emerging from the field itself’
- The idea that the form and the field should be more closely related was the overarching idea throughout this whole entire paper. The top four ideas themselves relate to this overall idea. The field conditions are the study of models or forms that work in the zone between figure and abstraction.
