The final piece that I chose for my portfolio comes from lesson number nine. This lesson was focused on the copyright laws that exist in the United States. I felt that it was important to once again discuss this idea because it is so important for the future of art in this country. The idea of shared ideas and debate is something that I think is important to the growth of art. As the reading stated, “The structure demands that they create as they participate in the discussion” (Lessig p. 86, 2008). The art world is structured in the same way. It demands that everyone create art while they are participating in discussing art.
For my synthesis of these two readings, which was the assignment for this section, I discussed how copyright laws are similar to patent laws. I wrote, ” The copyright laws were originally intended to protect artist from having their hard work stolen. To me this is no different than the patent rights arguments that are being discussed all the time.” By comparing this idea to that of the patent conversation I was hoping to bring a better understanding to the complex relationship between owners rights and the greater good.
