Portfolio: Human Values

The point of this assignment was to look at the reading of the week and then come up with a challenging thought that came from the reading. The intention was to get not only myself but also others in my group to start thinking about these same ideas. To do this I chose to look at the example that Lewis had used about how certain cultures did not act according to the thought of rules of how a human should act, and because of this there are no inherent values.

The original line was, “Yet in medieval and even modern Japan, among other cultures, personal beliefs about correct behavior commonly lead to ritual suicide, and in Tibet before the Chinese invasion a substantial percentage of the population chose to live celibately in monasteries” ( Lewis pg. 7-8 1990). While I did not post this directly into my post, I did address it as such, “I do think that the use of anecdotal evidence in support of his position is the incorrect thing to be doing.” This shows that I was taking a direct point from the reading, as instructed, and addressing it with my own thoughts on the issue. For the future I want to continue to learn about how certain values are adapted, and whether or not there are genetic values but can be ignored if others are taught to have more importance.
