Values Discussion

After reading Lewis’s article” A Question of Values: Six Ways We Make the Personal Choices That Shape Our Lives”, I find it is really helpful to understand and re-examine my personal values through the four basic interior mental modes and two major synthetic mental modes. According to the author, sense experience, deductive logic, emotion and intuition are the only four basic methods that we come to know something (Lewis,10). I agree with this point because I find these four modes almost cover all circumstances when I develop my values at first glance. For example, when I operate chemical experiment at the lab, my knowledge is directly gained from my own five senses. I can only interpret the results through what I have seen, touched or smelled. In addition, we need deductive reasoning to understand surrounding with consistency. For instance, we all know that we need to take the responsibility to our families. By deductive logic, we understand that our country is a bigger family that we all have responsibility to it. Thus, we may develop “loyalty” as our lifelong value. The author also mentioned two synthetic modes, called “authority” and “science”. I agree with his example about authority, since religion belief is always associated with authority, emotion and intuition. We are born with different cultural backgrounds. For me, the belief that Buddha is sacred and can bring people good luck, formed early in my heart since my childhood. In addition, my emotion and intuition automatically give Buddha with awe and belief.

At the last, the author indicates that, “ Sorting through available value choices in a systematic way is arguably more important than any of the other discretionary things we do”(Lewis,18). I totally agree with this idea and I find this reading really help me to re-examine my personal values. Without clear values, our life won’t be satisfied and happy. I am curious, besides these six ways to develop values, are there other modes to help us get to know something?

Hi, Qunliu. My post also mainly talked about the six modes. In your post, you orderly introduced the each modes and give some examples to support it. I do not know if you mentioned that Lewis introduced the different emphases on the six modes for different people. As he explained, “One person may emphasize emotion very strongly, but still rely on the other modes. Another person may emphasize sense experience and loathe emotional judgments without ever completely escaping them…This is one of the factors that makes human values so subtle, complex, and infinitely diverse, at least to the casual eye” (Lewis, 14). My emphases are more focus on sense experience and deductive logic rather than emotion or intuition because I feel the emotion or intuition is something that is virtual, which mean I cannot touch it so I do not believe it. So what are your emphases?

Thanks for your response. One of my emphases is also focus on sense experience. It hard to say whose value is better since the development process of value is hard to predict and control. However, I believe there are some ways to lead people to build better values to guide their thinking and behaviors. I also think environment and the way to build values are very important during value development process especially for children. For example, to better teach a child not cheat, parents can help the child to build a value of honesty and know the benefits of act ethically. To better train a good driver, building a value of safe driving and understanding the fines and punishments would be the better ways to do that. It is better to start from the beginning of value development process and make improvements rather than make adjustments at last. In addition, if we do established our values and identified some problems, we could trace back to our value development process and figure out why we built such values and make adjustments. I believe in this way, people will be easier to accept and build adjustments.
