Media, Marketing, & Communications

My learning goals for this term are to become familiar, and hopefully proficient, with how to use Adobe Creative Suite.  I’d also like to learn how to discuss typography, the terminology for marketing and discussing graphic design, as well as the basics of design.  This is a whole new world and language for me and I want to learn as much as possible so that I can be independent in working with this software and understand what people mean when discussing design elements.

Having come to the end of the term, I think I have begun the journey in accomplishing my learning goals.  I am more familiar, although not nearly wholly proficient, in using Adobe Illustrator and have a good start on learning Adobe InDesign.  The experience I have in using them so far has definitely made software that was confusing and intimidating usable and shown me how easy it can be to design any number of things.  I also have a grasp of basic design elements and found Robin Williams’s books to be very informative.  I can tell a difference in my use of design techniques now in comparison with two months ago in that I have a better grasp of contrasting elements and alignment.  If I were to discuss printing or design with a professional, I think I could participate in the discussion and not walk away feeling totally confused like I would have previously.  I feel more confident overall and look forward to building on my skill set that is a really good foundation.
