Dr. Fei Mao (PhD, class of 1990) will give a talk on Wednesday, April 12, at 3:00 PM in the Giustina Ballroom of the Ford Alumni Center. His talk, titled “Learning from Experiences,” will focus on professional development and career paths outside of academia.
Dr. Mao is visiting campus as part of the UO Graduate School’s Distinguished Alumni Speaker program.
Paulo Schirch, class of 1981, reports that he retired in 2013 after 25 years with Solvay. At the time of his retirement, Dr. Schirch was president of the company’s South America division. Currently he is serving as a Board Member of Peroxidos do Brasil and at the Brazilian Chemical Association (ABIQUIM).
Dr. Schirch received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Virgil Boekelheide, and did his postdoctoral work at Ohio State University.
UO Chemistry and Biochemistry alum Mike Taylor was selected for the 2017 panel that will judge an international design competition highlighting achievement in the use of natural wood veneer products.
Taylor, the CEO of States Industries in Eugene, OR, earned his BS in Chemistry in 1994 and MBA through UO’s Lundquist College of Business in 2005.

Dr. Thale Jarvis has been appointed Chief Scientific Officer at Keystone Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology. Dr. Jarvis earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Oregon (Class of ’89).

Veteran FBI agent Julia Cowley spoke about her experience in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit at Westfield State University in Massachusettes this past October. Her lecture was hosted by WSU departments of psychology and criminal justice.
Ms. Cowley graduated from the University of Oregon in 1993 with a B.S. in Chemistry.

The Fall 2016 edition of the UO’s Cascade magazine includes an article about alum Ian Rinehart‘s research in the Tyler lab.
Rinehart, a Presidential Undergrad Research Scholar and recipient of a 2015 SAACS Undergraduate Research Award, graduated in spring 2016 with a B.S. degree in Chemistry.

The American Chemical Society caught up with UO Chemistry and Biochemistry alum Richard Glover to talk about green chemistry in the laboratory and classroom during the GC&E conference in June.
Richard earned his PhD in Chemistry in 2013, and teaches chemistry at Bellevue College in Washington State.

While pursuing her PhD in chemistry at the University of Oregon, Chantal Balesdent, class of 2013, knew that she was passionate about sharing her love for science, but didn’t feel drawn to a traditional teaching career. So as graduation drew near, Chantal began looking for opportunities in informal science education. Her search resulted in a position with Engineering is Elementary (EiE), a project of the National Center for Technological Literacy at the Museum of Science, Boston. Now in her third year as a Professional Development Provider for EiE, Chantal trains elementary school teachers in curricula that encourage students to apply their science and math skills to engineering activities that are based on real-world technologies and problems.
