The Mid-Point

It’s a little strange to be writing a reflection on a studio with the knowledge that I am going to be continuing the project in another term. Going through the term, I focused much of my thinking into a somewhat myopic view of the interaction between the built and natural environment, trying to create a relationship between the two that I became less and less satisfied with as the term came to a close. My reviewers pointed this out as well. Belal Abboushi and Howard Davis, both excellent in their critiques, both mentioned that the programmatic element wasn’t completely integrated into the ecological functions of the site. I think going forward that I need to revisit the overall site layout, maybe this integration comes with a more sporadic deployment of the program through the site, and maybe that comes through an extension of the exoskeleton portion of the building through the site. Perhaps the entire building sits on stilts?

 

I think the greatest problems in my design process so far is the lack of correspondence between initial concept and the final form, and I think that comes with the thinking of the structure of the building. Rethinking how the building is constructed, and how that structure interacts with the ecological function of the site should be a great informant to the direction the project should go. The way I thought about structure up to now has been in relation to the programmatic elements, and not with its relationship with the site. Reflecting on this further, I’m not sure that the way I’ve thought about structure has given the project a chance at being an overall cohesive project. Over the next two weeks, and the first part of next term, I’ll be finalising an approach that combines the entire project together around the two principles I started this project off with: the relationship between the built and natural environments and new models for collaboration.
