Creative Spirituality Discussion
In my opinion, artists often have a lot of inspiration, they will take inspiration in their works, make their work more spirituality. Their inspiration is usually based on what happened around and see people or things, they observed the angle is not the same with us, what we see is usually very plain, but they often think of the deeper meaning, which is why artists have more inspiration than we do. In the article “Deeply Seeing”, the author, Grey states, “artists need to be able to see on each level in order to bring technical beauty, archetypal beauty, and spiritual beauty to their work” (P.73). That means artists always want to bring spiritual things from their life to their works, such as beauty things. They want to through this to make their works more spiritual and let more people like their works. Otherwise, he mentions “Inspiration means access to spirit. Spirit brings vision to the artist via the imagination, the multidimensional media center of our minds” (Grey, P82). The author points out that artists’ spirit is come from some images and from lots of social media. So that tell us everything happens in our side is can be a good idea or a inspiration for artists. I think that is true, because my painting teacher always tell me that when you see an apple, you should know which part of the apple is shaded, and which part of apple is brighter than other side, when you know that you can draw the apple well. I always remember that words, because I think even artists have more inspirations than us, but they are still learning from the beginning, from the students to a good artist. Thus, when people become sensitive about the things happened around them, they will have more inspirations, and they will become more creative.

It is true that everything around us could be turned into art, the reason why normal people could not is that they do not use their spirit to feel things. Your example reminds me a story about Da Vinci. The story talks about when Da Vinci start learning how to draw, his teacher let him to depict eggs. When Da Vinci thinks he has finished the drawing, the teacher says the drawing is not good enough. The thing that is lack in the drawing is his sprit. Since then, Da Vinci learns the most important skill of drawing. I don’t know the story is true or not, but the idea is very clear. Spirit of the artiest is important of presenting his work.

Artists tend to pay more attention to the ‘spirit’ of objects and things and it is true that artist could not observe the ‘spirit’ of things if there are no other accessible media materials. The ‘perspectives’ artists cultivated through their days and years of art practice are very different from our common perspectives. Through your example of the apples, I find that often times teacher play an important role in teaching us ‘how to look’; but in order to become a great artist, we need to also step out and go beyond what the teacher told us to do and embrace our own life experiences into art practices.

The reason why I think artists is pay more attention to the spirit is because I think artists always have more special opinions on the things they have seen, and happened around of them. They always can find beautiful things from their life. Otherwise, for most artists, spirituality is the same as creativity, if they want to be a famous artist, they must have some special artworks to attract people to see your works. The special is reflected on their creative abilities, those abilities are helpful to artists to make better artworks for their audience. To some extent, this is also a kind of spirituality, this is a creative spirit. Thus, I think spirituality is tend artists to be better.

February 22, 2015 at 11:46 pm (10 years ago)Hi, I agree with your opinions about the relationship between artists’ inspiration and how they seeing objects in their life. You mentioned the angle that artists see the world is different with ordinary people, this refers to the three eyes theory. The three eyes means three kinds of way to see the world, “the eye of flesh sees the “outer” realm of material objects: the eye of reason sees symbolically, drawing distinctions and making conceptual relationships and the mystic eye of contemplation sees the luminous transcendental realm” (Grey 73). Ordinary people generally apply the first two kinds of eyes in their life but the artists could apply the mystic eye of contemplation to see the world and that is why they always can get inspiration to create artworks.
