Remix Discussion
In the TED video “Laws That Choke Creativity”, the speaker Larry Lessig introduced three examples to support his main idea; they are talking machine, celestial copyrights and the ASCAP cartel. I start to think about the importance of the copyright in the model society after I watched that video. In my opinion, the copyright is good for protecting the original creators’ works, such as authors’, artists’ and musicians’. Because the copyright law can keep creators’ rights, this law should be keep and carry out. Otherwise the value of copyright law is that is benefit for creators to avoid others plagiarize their works, and encourage more people to create more special inventions for the world. However, maybe someone would say that copyright limits people’s creativities. To some extent, it will limit some people to mix something together, like some musicians, they like to mix several songs together to make that become a new song, that’s awesome! So if the copyright law is carry out strict that means they are not free to use others music. In my view about the copyright is that current copyright regulations should be strengthened. Because even people know that they cannot copy others’ music or articles, there still lots of people do not comply with the law, they do not stop plagiarizing others’ works. For example, in China, there are lots of people make the pirated DVDs and pirated books selling in some store, and they use that to earn money. I think the government should punish them, but no one comes to their stores to tell the sellers should stop selling those pirated things. So, I support that copyright should be strengthened to let people know the importance of the original copyright, and make more people realize that plagiarize is bad for the original creators, they should stop doing that.

I agree with you that the copyright regulations should be strengthened in some countries, like China because their laws of copyright are behindhand. However, in the developing countries, their copyright regulations are enough to ensure the healthy development of society and economics so I think their copyright regulations could change in some region, like for the non-business use. If someone want to remix something that may have to use some artworks but his remix definitely is just for fun rather than for business, the copyright regulation could exempt him. Therefore, the changes of copyright regulations would hurt the benefits of original creators but also could motivate the creativity.

Like you mentioned in the comment, you said that in the developing countries, “their copyright regulations are enough to ensure the healthy development of society and economics so I think their copyright regulations could change in some region, like for the non-business use”. This is a good point, because I just consider how to make the copyright system become stronger, but I do not think about how to use that in the different people, so your idea is more complete than my point. Furthermore, you said that”copyright regulations would hurt the benefits of original creators but also could motivate the creativity”. I think you think this problem deeper than me, so I agree with your this opinion.

March 8, 2015 at 11:15 pm (10 years ago)I think it is interesting that you feel that copyright laws should be strengthened. I think that it is not an issue with copyright laws when a DVD is pirated and sold in a store for profit. This has to do with leaking information, and the fact that the people buying it know that this is a pirated copy. This doesn’t seem to be copyright issues to me but more of property theft, and then people just going along with it. If someone was then using the exact ideas and stuff to make another movie that was pretty much the same but with a few different actors I think that would be more about copyright issues recreating the movie that had already been done. Its more about the issue of idea recreation, and less about the issue of physical recreation.

It turns out that these audiobooks are his speech from his own videos. It looks like someone converted the audio from the video using this site and then just framed it as an audiobook.
