For this midterm pinup, I have presented some elevations that show how the facade will look like, some sections and floor plans that focused on the maker’s space and the museum space. The plan of offices and research spaces on the upper levels still need further development. I have also created a few perspectives to get a glimpse how the space will look like, especially the center courtyard which I think is quite important, as it is the first impression before entering the building and the landing place of rainwater. In this review, I have got a few useful advice both from the UO professors and architects from China.

  • Pay more attention to the surrounding, see how the building will affect the areas around, and try to optimize it so that the impact can be reduced.
  • Rethink the edge condition of the building, open up the North side more, connect this edge to the North area more.
  • Increase the height of the covered public plaza
  • Extend the water channel even more to empathize its importance
  • Look more into the roof, the layers and structure, find a more transparent material.
  • Pay attention to the shadow casted, design the space according to the data collected.
  • Look at how the glass windows open since they are not regular in shape. See which windows are operable or fixed.

The next step will be to look more into the structure system, check the distance between each column and see if they work. I will also look at the floor plates and minimize the unnecessary or useless space, and convert them into a more unified volume according to the program.

Concept Sketches for Next Step:

Open up the North part more, so that the area over there can be more connected to the new building

Increase the height of the plaza, perhaps adding holes or lifting some area of the floor plates to increase the height, so that the space will feel less oppressed .

Unify the facade roof line, make it cleaner so that there will be more contrast between the entire roof and the facade.
