Week 6 – Interior Daylighting

BLOG POST: Due Friday, May 6
Reflect on your midterm review and write a blog post
1) Key design ideas to keep reinforcing
2) Show major developments since December and describe how they support the key ideas
3) Which areas most critically need attention for further development or adjustment?

INTERIOR ROOM STUDY: Due Monday May 9
The most intimate experience with a building occurs at the scale of the room, where the hand can touch materials and see how connections are made. Select a major space to describe and consider inhabitant values, aspirations and daily activities.

a) Create a simple daylighting box model and try substituting different apertures.
b) Tonal renderings (Digital OR Digitally painted version of daylighting model)
c) Reflected ceiling plan for the room.

LIGHTING REFERENCESDaylight Pattern Guide

  • Discover Lighting Lighting basics are presented in a graphical, accessible format. Clearly organized topics introduce vocabulary, optics, lamp and ballast types, application considerations.
  • DaylightingPatterns A freely available interactive tool for the design of proven daylighting strategies in a variety of building types. Users will be introduced to the Daylighting Pattern Guide while exploring the inter-relationship of sky, site, aperture, and space planning. The guide uses a combination of built examples and advanced simulation to set the stage for substantial reductions in lighting power consumption and overall energy use through successful daylighting design.
  • Daylighting Handbook – Resources Prof. Christopher Reinhardt (author of DIVA) of MIT’s resources for daylighting. Topics range from basic to advanced, including design-oriented examples as well as detailed techniques.
