Moving forward, I see potential in the long site section. Right now, there is this level change (tiers) from the streetcar/pedestrian high-line bridge to the building lot ground level to the water’s edge. In this procession, I will begin to integrate more interaction and circulation at more levels with multiple plaza tiers. Each of these plazas can have more of a focus, such as a maker’s plaza, a career fair plaza, market plaza, etc. Seeing more opportunity in this stepping down process, I will begin to integrate the building/buildings with the site and ultimately the Willamette River.
Further, I need to begin to focus more on the river and the buildings visual connection to it. There needs to be more spaces dedicated to a direct connection to the River and downtown. This idea of porosity I have will link the multiple double/triple height atrium spaces to large openings on the buildings exterior. I also need to rethink the presentation/reveal of the river in the direct precession to the water’s edge. It can be more deliberate instead of a sneak peak or suspenseful reveal. Instead of being more inner focused with the plaza, I will begin to open up and expose the direct connection to the river and the cityscape.
This was a successful term, solidifying a concept and sustainable ideas, laying the tracks for building development this upcoming term. The inner guts (programmatically) are being worked into these new enhancing additions, successfully providing further circulation opportunity at multiple levels, reinforcing an indoor outdoor linkage (porosity) the building possesses. The materiality studies have allowed for an interesting pallet mix that supports the conceptual idea with a clash of materials in to out. I am excited to take on the challenge of transforming this canyon-esque tectonic to an actual constructed system.
