I had a great discussion with the reviewers on Thursday. The reviewers appreciated the site analysis and site studies and the inspirations I got from them. The urban design ideas are good. The idea of the curves incorporated in the city scale (seen in the site plan diagrammatically), site scale, and program scale is nice. The program pieces are nicely refined. The organization of pieces, however, need work. It was suggested to me to write a narrative from three different perspectives: The people who work here (or are serious boat builders), the people who take the classes here (and learn making sailboats), and finally the public (people who want to just check this place out). Overlaying these three narratives should give me a better idea of how to organize the building. Where do these three different groups overlap? How does each experience the different areas? How can the public go through the building and seeing the process of sailboat making? Can there be double-loaded rooms instead of double-loaded corridors? The second weakness is the sectional quality of the building. It doesn’t follow the language of the previous ideas and languages, nor does it respond well to the program elements. And the third weakness is east edge condition of the southern wing. It seems to be detached from the context and needs a face-lift.
