The Woman Who Watch Sports

So as the World Series started this week it is just as can be expected; there are two male broadcasters commentating on the game rather than a male and a female. Yet at the end of the game when it comes to doing the on camera interview, there is the pretty girl waiting on the sidelines for her chance in the spotlight. When viewership by female fans is up to an astonishing 38% of total viewers that tuned in to watch the 2010 World Series it is disappointing that the media representation doesn’t represent fairly the viewer ratio.

Not only is the viewer and fan gender ration been divided over the years, but the amount of woman playing, reporting and coaching sports has grown drastically. Sports are no longer a man’s world and yet the televised representation has not progressed in the same way that other areas of sports have developed. College athletics are now required to have a certain number of male and/or female athletic teams based on the gender ratio that is represented on each campus.

Beyond the collegiate level there have been several professional woman sports leagues that have been developed over the past couple of decades. The WNBA, LPGA, NWSL and Pro Fast pitch just to name a few. What these leagues offer beyond opportunities for female athletes to play professionally, but they also provide an opportunity for females to work in positions that in the male counterpart leagues, the same opportunities just do not exist for females. Some of these opportunities include that in which for females to lead the broadcast. What women have come to prove through these opportunities is that when it comes to knowledge of the game gender is not a factor. The ability to talk sports doesn’t come with a Y chromosome.

So now that women have proven once again that any challenge you throw at us we are going to rise up and take it, when will start seeing the ladies with a headset on? When will see the first NFL game with a full female team taking the lead? What is it going to take?
