“Mapping the African Telecommunications Universe: Actors, Networks, and Policies”

Tewodros (Teddy) Workneh’s research is focused on international communication, government surveillance, and global media. He believes it is important for research to be interdisciplinary for a robust scholastic experience. Workneh also looks at information communication technology and its effects on everyday users. His current research target includes African diaspora communities, specifically communities from his home country of Ethiopia and the east coast of Africa. He also served as a lecturer for the Department of English Language and Literature at Arba Minch University in Ethiopia.

Workneh is the author of journal articles and book chapters, including “Chinese Multinationals in the Ethiopian Telecommunications Sector” (Communication, Culture & Critique, 2016); “Digital Cleansing? A Look into State-sponsored Policing of Ethiopian Networked Communities” (African Journalism Studies, 2015); “War Journalism or Peace Journalism? A Case Study of US and British Newspapers Coverage of the Somali Conflict” (Global Media Journal, 2011); and “Sub-Saharan Africa” (Routlege, 2010). His dissertation was entitled, The Politics of Telecommunications and Development in Ethiopia (2014).
