Kappa Kappa Gamma House History

Submitted by Chapter President Cami Hollero

The first Kappa Kappa Gamma house. The inscription on the picture reads, “For 12 years the new Beta Omega Chapter occupied a large house originally leased by the Gamma Delta Gamma group. In 1925, however, the Chapter moved to its own newly built house on the corner of Fifteenth and Alder. With alterations this house has continued to be the chapter house.”

The current KKG house circa 1925 that has been host to only Kappa’s for the past 97 years!

Campus Greeks at Dads’ Gates in 1945

Work on the ornamental Dads’ Gates began in August 1940.  They were were formally dedicated on February 8, 1941, as part of the 14th annual Dad’s Day celebration weekend. The UO Dads Club was the sponsor and underwriter of the project. The Dads Club was a patron-parent organization established in 1927. The concept for the gates began in 1938 and was supported with funding from the Dads Club with additional support from a PWA program. Abbot Lawrence, a UO architecture graduate and son of Ellis Lawrence, created the design that was executed by metal craftsman Orion B. Dawson.

Orion Benjamin Dawson was a master blacksmith who produced numerous iron works as an employee with the Depression-era Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. Dawson’s work in Oregon can be seen at the University of Oregon’s Knight Library and Howe Field, Oregon State University, and Timberline Lodge.

The History of Hendricks Hall

Though not exactly a Greek organization, Hendricks Hall was once a Women’s dormitory that housed many in the Greek community when they were not living in their chapter houses. The hall was run similar to a chapter house with elected officers and house rules.

Construction began on Hendricks Hall dormitory in July 1917 and was completed in February of 1918.  The dormitory formally opened on February 23, 1918. The building was named for T. G. Hendricks, grocer, then banker, who was instrumental in raising funds for Deady Hall’s construction.  It was built to accommodate 112, but lack of sufficient furniture allowed only about 50 to reside in the dorm the first months.  The building was in the “Georgian Colonial” style that Lawrence prescribed for works outside of the main quadrangle. Mary Spiller House was connected to Hendricks Hall through the dining room (Refectory). Spiller House was razed in 1951. The refectory was remodeled in the 1970s to house offices.

Below the photo is a copy of the rules hall residents had to abide by in the early 1940s.
