During the spring 2016 term, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life worked with the presidents of the fraternity and sorority governing councils and chapters to develop a long-term funding model that will be supported through a Fraternity and Sorority Life Fee. The purpose of this fee is to provide the members of fraternities and sororities with a sustainable advising and programming model to create a membership experience that is congruent with both the university’s and the organizations’ mission, purpose and values. This fee will be assessed once per year to all affiliated students.
How Will the Fee Be Used?
The Fraternity and Sorority Life Fee will allow the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to be a self-funded office, and the money generated will go towards providing increased staffing, training, and developmental programs for the over 3,500-member community that comprises 17% of the campus population. The Fraternity and Sorority Life Advisory Board, comprised of students, alumni, faculty, will assist the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life in making strategic decisions on programming initiatives from the money generated by the fee each year. The non-refundable fee will be $125 per year in the 2024-2025 academic year. More information about how this fee will be used can be found in the FSL Committee on Staffing, Support and Budget report.
When Will I Be Charged?
Returning members will be charged when bills are released in Fall term. During the first term of membership for students joining or transferring into an organization in the Panhellenic Council or Interfraternity Council, the charge will be made on their tuition bills in Fall term. Students who become affiliated in the Winter or Spring will be billed after recruitment ends that respective term. Members will continue to be billed once per year throughout the duration of their membership in a fraternity or sorority at the University of Oregon. Students participating in the Membership Intake Process for the Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council will be charged during their first full term of membership due to the timing of Membership Intake during the previous term. If a student resigns after accepting a bid, has their membership terminated during the term, or if an organization is suspended by the university for violations of the Student Conduct Code, they will not be charged the following year. However, they will not be refunded for the current year they were an initiated member or accepted a bid after attending chapter related functions (including participating in the intake process wherein they accept a bid) and were subsequently listed on a chapter roster.
How to Apply for a Fee Waiver?
Students that experience economic hardship or financial need can complete a Fee Waiver Application application (waiver closes at the end of each term).
