FSL FAQs

What is FSL Fee for?

In spring 2016, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life collaborated with council and chapter presidents to create a long-term funding model supported by a Fraternity and Sorority Life Fee. This fee aims to provide sustainable advising and programming for fraternity and sorority members, aligning with both the university’s and organizations’ missions and values. It will be assessed annually to all affiliated students

The Fraternity and Sorority Life Fee will allow the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to be a self-funded office, and the money generated will go towards providing increased staffing, training, and developmental programs for the over 3,500-member community that comprises 17% of the campus population.  The Fraternity and Sorority Life Advisory Board, comprised of students, alumni, faculty, will assist the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life in making strategic decisions on programming initiatives from the money generated by the fee each year. The non-refundable fee will be $125 per year in the 2024-2025 academic year.

Where do I report an incident?

Safety is our number one priority at FSL. Because of that, The Office of the Dean of Students and the Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance have invested in a reporting platform called Real Response, already used in Athletics, to pilot an additional anonymous method of reporting within the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) community. Real Response’s Anonymous Threads is a unique communication platform that enables secure, confidential reporting through standard text messaging, email, and an online portal. This software will significantly enhance our capacity to hear from and support students without fearing you will trigger an official university report. Real Response allows for continuous, anonymous conversations, building trust and providing opportunities for timely intervention and support. This platform accommodates various topics, such as mental health concerns and hazing reports, and offers valuable data insights through dashboard analytics. How do I show interest in an MSFC chapter?

At the University of Oregon, we are proud to host several Multicultural Sororities and Fraternities that comprise the Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council (MSFC).

MSFC chapters seek to promote general welfare and support the diversity of all students within the FSL community and beyond. Founded upon the principles of culture and creating opportunity for its members, MSFC organizations offer an experience that allows for the free exchange of ideas, programs, and services; promotes awareness of cultural diversity, and empowers students to use their voices to foster positive social change on campus.

How do I show interest in a NPHC chapter?

At the University of Oregon, we are the proud home of 6 National Pan-Hellenic Council Organizations (NPHC). The National Purpose of the NPHC is to promote unity and expose members to the “service for life” philosophy and foster leadership development and scholarship.

Our Purpose as the NPHC at the University of Oregon is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, develop leaders and promote the brotherhood and sisterhood in which all of our organization’s purposes entail, foster ideas of service and charity with a primary focus on our Black community and the Eugene community we serve, create an environment that respects the dignity and worth of every individual within the council, and continuously stimulate the ambition of council members in order to influence and carry out our purposes within everything we do.

How much does being in a chapter cost?

Like many opportunities for involvement in college, there is a financial commitment associated with joining a sorority or fraternity. These costs go toward inter/national fees, chapter operating expenses, philanthropy events, social functions, lodge expenses, and much more. Financial obligations differ among individual sororities. Potential members should ask each fraternity or sorority about these financial obligations. In some cases, financial aid and scholarships may apply to membership and housing costs.

New members can expect to pay higher dues their first semester due to the one-time new member fees. New member dues can range between $125-$1300 per quarter and active member dues (including room and board) range from $2500-3200 per quarter. Some organizations will offer payment plans, but this is dictated by the inter/national organization’s policies. There are additional expenses that your student might incur such as purchasing sorority t-shirts or memorabilia, fees for additional events, fees to bring guests to events, etc.

The cost of being in a chapter is entirely dependent on the organization. Financial Transparency sheets are distributed during fall formal recruitment for PHC chapters, as well as both Fall and Spring recruitment for IFC Chapters. For more information on all four council’s finances, contact the chapter and organizations directly.
