Deeply Seeing

In the article “Deeply Seeing”, the author talks about the importance of seeing. When we see the subject, the meaning is coming up in our mind at the same time. He says, “Seeing determines every aesthetic decision” (72). First, artists see the subject that inspires them to create new things. Second, they scan the subject, then “dissecting the relationships of part to part balanced within the forms, appreciating the rhythm of its structure”. Furthermore, the author talks about his adaptation of the scientists finding of creative process. The creative process includes formulation, saturation, incubation, inspiration, translation and integration. In my opinion, I don’t think seeing determines every aesthetic decision. Artists can get inspiration beyond seeing. They can hear, touch and taste. Many ways would inspire people to create such as sound, music and smell. For the creative process that the author introduces in the article, I agree with him, but it is also a little complicated for me. This kind of creative process is very logic and strict. Also, the author says, “Not all artists will recognize each phase in their work, and each phase takes its own time, widely varying from work to work” (76). Everyone has his or her own way to create things. I think some artists might just have two or three stages of the creative process that is mentioned in the article. When I took my creative strategist class, I drew a map of my creative process. My creative process only has four stages. I wote, “I am seeing what is going on in the world” – “Then I use my DSLR to record what I am seeing. The images are like puzzles” – “When I close my eyes, all of the images become a mess picture. I don’t know what it is, but it’s colorful” – “Images + Key words + Ideas = Story. Telling is the center of my creative process”. Finally, I complete the puzzles, a beautiful and colorful puzzle.

  1. Hi, Siyang. I found that your article is interesting. I saw you mentioned that you don’t consider seeing is the only way to determines the aesthetic decisions. You think hearing, touching and tasting also are the ways to affect people to create. Actually, this is what I think too. Like I mentioned in my article, I think people born with creativity. However, each individual have their way to find their creativity. In addition, I saw you mentioned how you create your artwork in their own way. You use analogy to describe it, I like the word “puzzles” you uses. I consider value is a factor to affect people to create? Do you agree that? Sometimes I just feeling my experience about lost love, betrayal such as theses a sets of emotional power can gave me the creativity to create artworks.

  2. Hi Emily,

The picture on the bottom really attracts me a lot. Talking about your creative process, I have my own creative process. Since I love to make movie, I always want to create a wonderful story. However, it is really hard for everyone. Therefore, what I always do is that I read some stories in books. Then after reading, I close my eyes, and I just imagine that I am in the stories. I feel what is happening around me. Then, I might have a story by my own. Furthermore, when I create my story, I still always imagine I am a part of the story, I mean, I am into the story. Then I could feel which part is good for audiences and which part is not.

    • Hi Houzhi! Thank your for interested in my picture. I know making movie is very hard. Since I am advertising major in journalism school, I’ve made some short videos before. The way you mentioned in the comment is really a nice start for your creative process in making movie. You are thinking about your audience, which is very important to a filmmaker or even a “creator”. If we want to make something not just for ourselves, we definitely need to put our feet into the audiences or viewers’ shoes. Hope you will make your own story in the future!
